West Belfast: in fiamme edificio Credit Union

Divis Credit Union up in flames after day of chaos in Belfast

Shocking photos show a West Belfast Credit Union engulfed in flames come after a day of chaos in parts of the city on Monday.

The disused building on the Lower Falls was up in flames while Ross Road was blocked at both ends by industrial bins on Monday night.

SDLP Councillor Tim Attwood said: “Outrageous old credit union building torched in Divis – no place for mindless thugs destroying our community.”

Chair of Belfast Sinn Fein , Sam Baker, said last night: “I am currently on the ground in the Falls with local activists engaging with residents and helping the community where we can.

“This area clearly rejects the actions carried out tonight by a small minority of individuals and we will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the residents in this fight against criminality.

“There is alternatives to this and we will continue to help provide such.

“Though let’s be absolutely clear, this sequence of events today in the Markets, New Lodge and the Falls has nothing to do with commemorating internment nor are those involved in anyway, shape or form acting in the name of Republicanism.

“It is merely an excuse for anti-community elements to destroy their own area, but thankfully it’s getting smaller every year.

“We will keep working hard to make them a thing of the past.”
