Il lealista Willie Frazer è comparso in aula a Belfast vestito come l’ex imam Abu Hamza
Frazer, 53 anni, è arrivato al tribunale di Laganside indossando un abito nero, zucchetto, barba finta, benda sull’occhio e un uncino su una mano.
L’uomo di South Armagh è libero su cauzione in attesa del processo per le accuse legate alle proteste lealiste sulle bandiere.
È accusato di aver incoraggiato a compiere reati durante una manifestazione per la bandiera dell’Unione a gennaio.
Deve rispondere anche di tre accuse per aver partecipato a un corteo pubblico non notificato, ostruzione al traffico e possesso di un’arma proibita – ovvero un Taser stordente.
Parlando con UTV venerdì prima di entrare in tribunale, Frazer ha detto di essersi vestito come Abu Hamza per protestare contro le accuse che deve affrontare.
“Fondamentalmente io sono qui per chiarire un punto.
“La legge con cui [le autorità] stanno cercando di accusarmi è stata creata per affrontare gli estremisti musulmani, che stanno predicando odio e rancore per le strade del Regno Unito, chiedendo la decapitazione dei soldati britannici e dei britannici infedeli, come vengono chiamati”, ha affermato.
“E chi accusano? Il primo uomo accusato nel Regno Unito è un protestante dell’Irlanda del Nord”, continua Frazer.
“C’è qualcosa di seriamente sbagliato nel sistema giuridico. Questa era una buona legge – ma la polizia ne ha fatto una parodia ed ora è una vergogna assoluta e totale.
“Ed ecco cosa sono qui a fare – a renderlo evidente”.
Willie Frazer era accompagnato da altri partecipanti alle proteste per la bandiera dell’Unione, tra cui Jim Dowson e Jamie Bryson, anch’essi travestiti.
Il religioso fondamentalista Abu Hamza al-Masri, che ha perso la vista da un occhio e due mani in una esplosione, è stato estradato dal Regno Unito in America dove affronterà le accuse di terrorismo, dopo numerosi ritardi dovuti a lotte giudiziarie.
Era stato tenuto in carcere in Gran Bretagna per incitamento all’omicidio e all’odio razziale.
Frazer si è tolto il vestito prima di comparire davanti al giudice presso il Tribunale di Belfast per un aggiornamento sul suo caso.
I pubblici ministeri hanno confermato che procederanno contro di lui in tale sede, piuttosto che trasferire tutto al Tribunale della Corona.
Agli avvocati di Frazer è stata data una settimana per dichiarare se intendono contestare le accuse.
Rilasciandolo nuovamente con la condizionale, la Giudice Distrettuale Fiona Bagnall ha detto che voleva sentirsi dire quanto a lungo durerà il caso se non ci saranno dichiarazioni di colpevolezza.
È stato inoltre confermato che le condizioni di rilascio di Frazer devono essere variate per consentirgli di partecipare ad una parata a Belfast in questo fine settimana.
Stewart Dickson di Alliance Party ha detto che il comportamento di Willie Frazer è stato profondamente offensivo.
“Sta prendendo in giro i musulmani e perpetua gli stereotipi. Anche la benda sull’occhio e l’uncino sono offensivi per le persone con disabilità. Facendo una tale bravata di cattivo gusto comparendo in tribunale si sta mostrando mancanza di rispetto per la nostra magistratura”, ha continuato.
“È stata mostrata la cattiveria e l’intolleranza di questi individui. Per essere una persona che sostiene di parlare a nome delle vittime, Willie si sta facendo beffe dei problemi che ha evidenziato”.

Frazer appears at court as ‘Abu Hamza’
Loyalist victims’ campaigner Willie Frazer has appeared at a Belfast court dressed as radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza.
Frazer, 53, arrived at the Laganside complex wearing a flowing black robe, skullcap, fake beard, an eye-patch and hooked hand.
The Markethill man is on bail awaiting trial for charges linked to the loyalist flag protests.
He is charged with encouraging offences at an address to union flag demonstrators in January.
He is also accused of three counts of taking part in an unnotified public procession, obstructing traffic in a public place, and possession of a prohibited weapon, namely a Taser stun gun.
Speaking to UTV on Friday before entering the court, Frazer said he had dressed as Abu Hamza in protest at the charges he faces.
“Basically I’m here to make a point.
“The law that they [the authorities] are trying to charge me with was brought out to deal with extreme Muslims, who are preaching hate and bitterness on the streets of the United Kingdom, calling for the beheading of British soldiers and British infidels as they call them,” he alleged.
“Who do they charge? The first man charged in the United Kingdom is a protestant from Northern Ireland,” he claimed.
“There is something seriously wrong with the legal system. This was a good law – but the police have made a mockery of it and it’s an utter and total disgrace.
“And that’s what I’m here to do – to make that point.”
He was accompanied by flag protestors Jim Dowson and Jamie Bryson, who were also dressed up in costumes.
Radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri, who lost the sight of one eye and both hands in an explosion, was extradited from the UK to America to face terrorism charges last year, after numerous delays due to legal wrangles.
He spent time in jail in the UK for incitement to murder and racial hatred.
Frazer removed the outfit before appearing before the judge at Belfast Magistrates’ Court for an update on his case.
Prosecutors confirmed that the case against him is to proceed summarily, rather than by indictment to the Crown Court.
Frazer’s lawyers were given one week to state whether he will contest the charges.
Releasing him on continuing bail, District Judge Fiona Bagnall said she wanted to be told how long the case will take if no guilty pleas are entered.
It was also confirmed that Frazer’s bail conditions are to be varied to enable him to attend a parade in Belfast this weekend.
Alliance Chief Whip Stewart Dickson has said Frazer’s actions are deeply offensive.
“He is mocking Muslims and perpetuating stereotypes. The eye patch and hook are also offensive to people with disabilities. By making such a distasteful stunt at a court appearance he is showing disrespect to our Judiciary,” he said.
“It has exposed the nastiness and intolerance of these individuals. As a person who claims to speak on behalf of victims, Willie is making a mockery of the issues he has highlighted.”
