Missiles found during Dublin searches

Gardaí have seized missiles and arrested 12 people following protests at Connelly Station in Dublin.

Protesta contro la visita della reginaThe eleven men and one woman were detained under the Public Order Act during searches on Thursday, the third day of the Queen’s visit.

They were due to appear before a special court sitting later in the evening.

Security was stepped up across Dublin for the Queen’s arrival, amid fears of violent rioting.

The Queen was also entertained by acts including X-Factor star Mary Byrne, Westlife and Riverdance at a gala event in Dublin on Thursday night, hosted by the British Embassy.

The four-day trip, which included laying a wreath at the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin, has been hailed as a triumph by politicians in Ireland and Britain.

At a state banquet in Dublin Castle on Wednesday evening, the Queen made her only public address of the trip.

She sympathised with the victims of the Troubles and all those who had suffered in conflict between the two countries.

In a personal message on Thursday, the Queen also expressed her sympathy at the death of former Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald, a move which was seen to confirm the strengthening relationship between the two governments.

The Queen will end her trip to the Republic of Ireland in Cork on Friday, while the Republic prepares for a second State visit.

The President and First Lady of the United States are expected to touch down in Dublin on Monday morning.

Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, will begin their trip by meeting Irish President Mary McAleese at Áras an Uachtaráin.
