Martin McGuinness: “Se eletto festeggerò la Battaglia del Boyne del 12 luglio”

Il candidato presidente dello Sinn Fein, Martin McGuinness, ha promesso di continuare la tradizione di tenere una festa ogi 12 luglio nel giardino di Aras an Uachtarain – la residenza presidenziale di Dublino – per gli unionisti che intendono festeggiare la Battaglia del Boyne.

McGuinness ha affermato che l’evento del 12 luglio voluto dall’attuale presidente Mary McAleese è qualcosa che è “determinato” a mantenere se verrà eletto.

Il 12 luglio gli unionisti festeggiano l’anniversario della vittoria del principe Guglielmo d’Orange sul re cattolico Giacomo II nella battaglia avvenuta nei pressi del fiume Boyne.

“Sono molto determinato a proseguirla”, ha detto McGuinness. “Sono desideroso di mantenere aperte le porte di Aras per i fratelli e le sorell unioniste.

“Abbiamo fatto molti passi avanti nel Nord e sono stato nel governo per cinque anni insieme a Peter Robinson e a Ian Paisley e cose importanti stanno avvenendo nel Nord e vogliamo continuino a procedere.

“Ecco perché ho proposto di tenere un «Decennio di Rinconciliazione” dal 2012 in questo paese, perché molta gente è rimasta colpita durante il conflitto – e penso di essere stato nel cuore del processo che ha unito la popolazione d’Irlanda nella pace e contro ogni altro conflitto nel paese. Più unionisti si sentono benvenuti e invitati qui e rispettati, meglio è”.

Ha spiegato che gli piacerebbe invitare i senza tetto nella residenza di Phoenix Park nel giorno di Natale.

Martin McGuinness stava parlando durante la campagna elettorale a Cork e Kerry.

Nel Kerry ha fatto una passeggiata a Killarney e Listowel, ha parlato agli agricoltori nel mercato di Castleisland e ha tenuto un raduno a Tralee.

Oggi McGuinness sarà nella Contea di Tipperary prima di recarsi a Dublino dove sarà intervistato nel corso di Six One News a Rté.

Martin McGuinness in vow to mark Twelfth at the Aras

Irish presidential hopeful Martin McGuinness has promised to continue the tradition of hosting a garden party in Aras an Uachtarain on July 12 — for Orangemen to celebrate the Battle of the Boyne.

Mr McGuinness said the ‘Twelfth’ event initiated by Mary McAleese at the home of the president was something he was “determined” to continue if elected.

July 12 is the anniversary of the victory of Prince William of Orange over Catholic King James II in the Battle of the Boyne.

“I’d be very determined to do that,” Mr McGuinness said. “I’m passionate about ensuring that the doors of the Aras are kept open to our unionist brothers and sisters.

“We’ve made huge strides forward in the North and I’ve been in government for five years with Peter Robinson and Ian Paisley and important things are happening in the North and we’ve got to keep that going.

“That’s why I’ve proposed we should have a ‘Decade of Reconciliation’ from 2012 in this country because a lot of people have been hurt as a result of the conflict — and I think I’ve been at the heart of a process that has unified the people of Ireland for peace against any other conflict of Ireland. The more unionists are made feel welcome and invited here and respected, the better it is.”

He also said he’d like to welcome the homeless to the Phoenix Park residence on Christmas Day.

He was speaking on the campaign trail in Cork and Kerry yesterday.

In Kerry he did a walkabout in Killarney and Listowel, spoke to farmers at Castleisland mart and addressed a rally in Tralee.

Today, Mr McGuinness will be in Co Tipperary before travelling to Dublin where he will be interviewed for RTE’s Six One News.
