La Garda blinda Dublino per i funerali di David Byrne

Huge operation to monitor feud victim’s funeral

A huge policing plan is to be put in place for the funeral of David Byrne, who was shot dead at a boxing weigh-in at the Regency hotel in Dublin last Friday.

Armed garda patrols continued to watch potential flashpoint areas of the capital last night as senior officers prepared a blueprint to prevent another outbreak of violence in the bloody feud that claimed two lives in less than 80 hours.

Mr Byrne was believed to have been shot dead in retaliation for the murder of Gary Hutch in Spain last September. Three days later, the other faction in the feud struck back by shooting Eddie Hutch Snr at his home in the north inner city.

Officers said they planned to have a highly visible presence outside the south inner city church where Mr Byrne’s funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday to deter anybody intent on creating further bloodshed.

Undercover officers will also be deployed to keep watch on surrounding streets.

Officers from the specialist and local units know the identities of all of the key players in the deadly feud.

Many of them have gone to ground since the two murders and some are thought to have returned to Spain where many of their associates already have homes and contacts.

Gardaí say the introduction of armed checkpoints and saturation policing since last weekend has already disrupted the activities of members of the two gangs and prevented them from carrying out further acts of violence. Officers will also remain on high alert in the aftermath of the funeral and closely patrol known haunts of gang members.
