La polizia della Repubblica sta indagando sulla minaccia di morte fatta contro la parlamentare del Fine Gael Regina Doherty, ricevuta dopo una lite radiofonica con il leader dello Sinn Féin Gerry Adams
Dopo il dibattito svoltosi sulle frequenze di Radio LMFM, Regina Doherty ha ricevuto una serie di SMS e messaggi sui social network pieni di insulti, provenienti da individui anonimi.
Un messaggio minacciava la Doherty che la sua gola sarebbe diventata “una fessura” come risultato delle osservazioni formulate nel corso del dibattito.
La prominente politica del Fine Gael si è rivolta alla polizia ed è stata avviata un’indagine.
Alla signora Doherty è stato suggerito di prendere precauzioni per la propria sicurezza personale.
Contattata dall’Irish Independent, la parlamentare ha confermato la minaccia e ha detto di essere in contatto con la Gardai.
Un portavoce dello Sinn Féin ha detto: “Lo Sinn Féin condanna tutte le minacce ai politici. Non ci può mai essere alcuna giustificazione per questo tipo di comportamento.”.
Lucinda Creighton, leader del RENUA Ireland ha detto: “C’è una crescente tendenza tra i media, e anche nei partiti più grandi, di evitare di ricordare alla gente il passato dello Sinn Féin, preferendo di concentrarsi unicamente sulle loro politiche fiscali ed economiche”.
“La realtà è che non c’è nessun altro attacco contro il leader di un partito politico, tranne che con lo Sinn Féin, che potrebbe tradursi in minacce di morte e questo è il motivo per cui è così importante che Gerry Adams e lo Sinn Féin siano in prima linea a condannare questa minaccia”.
Gardai investigate ‘slit your throat’ death threat made against Fine Gael TD
Gardai are investigating a death threat made against Fine Gael TD Regina Doherty which was issued after she became embroiled in a heated radio row with Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams.
Following the debate on LMFM radio, Ms Doherty received a series of abusive messages via text message and social media from anonymous individuals.
One message warned that Ms Doherty’s throat would be “slit” as a result of her comments made during the debate.
The prominent backbencher has spoken with her local superintendent and an investigation has been launched.
It’s also understood she has been told to take precautions in relation to her personal safety.
Contacted today, Ms Doherty confirmed the threat and said she has been in touch with gardai.
A Sinn Fein spokesman said: “Sinn Féin condemns all threats to politicians. There can never be any justification for this type of behaviour.”
Lucinda Creighton, leader of RENUA Ireland said: “There is growing tendency amongst the media, and even in the larger political parties to shy away from reminding people of Sinn Féin’s past, instead focussing solely on their tax or economic policies.”
“The reality is that that there is no other attack against a political party leader except Sinn Féin which could result in death threats being made against that person, and that’s why it is so important that Gerry Adams and Sinn Féin lead from the front in condemning this threat.”
