La polizia irlandese è in estremo allarme perché l’ex Chief of Staff dell’IRA ed un uomo misterioso sono stati visti filmare alcuni luoghi in cui si recheranno i reali britannici
Gli investigatori stanno disperatamente cercando di identificare l’uomo che è stato catturato sui nastri delle telecamere a circuito chiuso intorno al Trinity College in Nassau Street, accompagnato dal membro di spicco dei Provos.
Alcune fonti raccontano che Murphy, 61 anni, stava indicando le aree specifiche all’uomo del mistero che riprendeva la scena su una videocamera.
Investigatori collegati allo Special Branch hanno trascorso l’ultima settimana cercando di smascherare l’amico di Murphy, ma senza successo. Fonti dicono che “Slab Murphy” è ancora considerato come un membro di spicco e autorevole all’interno del movimento repubblicano.
Timori
Decine di agenti stanno lavorando a tempo pieno per cercare di identificare l’uomo per timore che possa essere un repubblicano in procinto di progettare un attacco quando la regina Elisabetta II arriverà a Dublino il 17 maggio.
La Gardai ha un reale timore che l’evento sarà funestato da un grave incidente di sicurezza e tutte le licenze ed i permessi dei poliziotti sono stati cancellati al fine di evitare un attacco terroristico.
Le fonti dicono che il Comandante della Garda è stato personalmente informato in merito allo sviluppo dell’affare “Slab” Murphy e tutti gli alti ufficiali sono estremamente preoccupati.
La regina si recherà in visita al Trinity College durate la sua storica visita di tre giorni, in programma per la metà di maggio.
Murphy è un terrorista senza scrupoli che architettò personalmente l’importazione di centinaia di tonnellate di armi dalla Libia durante i Troubles.
Come Chief od Staff dell’IRA – e leader della brigata di South Armagh – ha acconsentito a numerosi attacchi che hanno causato la morte di centinaia di persone.
I poliziotti della Repubblica d’Irlanda stanno anche sondando se questo incidente che coinvolge “Slab” Murphy è collegato al nuovo gruppo armato repubblicano che si è assunto la responsabilità per la morte del poliziotto cattolico Ronan Kerr, avvenuto ad Omagh lo scorso mese.
Venerdì scorso (il 22 aprile, Ndt) il gruppo, composto da ex membri dell’IRA, ha emesso un comunicato rivendicando l’omicidio e promettendo la prosecuzione della campagna armata fino alla fine della “occupazione britannica”.
I poliziotti della Garda stanno lavorando a stretto contatto con i loro colleghi della PSNI per valutare la capacità e la probabilità di iun eventuale attacco nel Sud durante la visita della regina. Hanno anche chiesto aiuto per individuare l’amico di Murphy visto al Trinity College.
Sorverglianza
Una fonte ha detto: “E’ giusto dire che questa è la più grande preoccupazione verso tutta l’organizzazione al momento. Slab Murphy è libero di andare e venire come vuole ma il fatto che un noto terrorista sia stato coinvolto in quello che sembra un’operazione di sorveglianza è estremamente preoccupante.
“Per essere onesti abbiamo davvero bisogno di scoprire il più presto possibile con chi è stato.
“E’ lecito ipotizzare che Slab Murphy conosca un sacco di persone determinate a distruggere il processo di pace e a colpire la regina”.
La Garda sarà costretta a chiedere aiuto all’Interpol per eseguire migliaia di controlli sui precedenti degli stranieri, per assicurarsi che non costituiscano una minaccia per la visita della regina.
Personale supplementare è stato spostato temporaneamente dall’ufficio Interpol di Dublino presso la sede della Garda per far fronte alla marea di controlli di sicurezza.
Gli ufficiali di polizia hanno deciso che tutte le case lungo il percorso della Regina saranno visitate dagli investigatori e tutti quelli che vivono lì saranno interrogati.
Se residenti non sono a casa quando telefona la Gardai verrà lasciata una nota affinché ci sia una nuova chiamata, perché i poliziotti devono incontrare fisicamente tutti i resideti lungo il percorso.
I cittadini irlandesi saranno soggetti a controlli dei precedenti penali attraverso il sistema informatico mentre i non-irlandesi saranno controllati tramite Europol e Interpol.
La polizia irlandese non sa quante persone devono ancora essere interrogate, ma ritengono che la cifra sia di decine di migliaia di abitanti.
Il controverso divieto sugli straordinari degli agenti della Garda è stato accantonato per consentirgli di effettuare il controllo dei precedenti penali, dopo che il Dipartimento della Giustizia ha stanziato fondi aggiuntivi per il bilancio della polizia. Si prevede che il costo dell’impianto di sicurezza per la visita sarà superiore a 25 milioni di euro.
La Regina viaggerà attraverso Phoenix Park, percorrerà North Quay fino a Croke Park ed a causa del numero di appartamenti in affitto lungo il percorso investigatori stanno contattando i proprietari registrati per ottenere una lista dei loro inquilini.
Il Sunday World ha anche appreso che tra i 30-40 sospetti repubblicani, classificati come ad alto rischio per la sicurezza, sono già sotto sorveglianza continua da parte dei membri delo Special Branch della Garda.
La polizia non ha alcuna notizia di intelligence sulla progettazione di n attacco contro la Regina da parte di qualsiasi gruppo armato repubblicano, ma non vogliono lasciare nulla al caso, per cui tutti i sospettati vengono controllati.
Continueranno ad essere monitorati 24 ore al giorno per le prossime tre settimane, fino a quando arriverà la Regina Elisabetta II.

Gardai on high alert after IRA chief and mystery man are spotted filming where Royals will visit next month
Detectives are desperately trying to identify the man who was caught on CCTV filming areas around Trinity College on Nassau Street last Saturday, accompanied by the provo kingpin.
Senior sources say that the 61-year old was pointing out specific areas to the mystery man who was capturing the scene on a camcorder.
Detectives attached to the special branch have spent the last week trying to unmask Murphy’s pal but without success. Sources say Slab Murphy is still regarded as being a senior and influential member of the republican terror movement.
Fears
Dozens of officers are working full time to try to get the man identified over fears he could be a dissident republican planning to launch an attack when Queen Elizabeth II arrives on May 17.
Gardai have real fears that the event will be marred by a major security incident and all Garda leave has been cancel in order to prevent a terror attack.
Sources say that the Garda Commissioner has been personally briefed about the Slab Murphy development and senior officers are hugely concerned about it.
The Queen will visit Trinity during her historic three-day visit next month.
Murphy is a ruthless terrorist who personally masterminded the importation of hundreds of tonnes of lethal weapons from Libya during the Troubles.
As head of the IRA – and leader of the ruthless South Armagh cell – he was in charge while hundreds of innocent people were killed.
Gardai are also probing whether the worrying Slab Murphy surveillance incident is linked to the new terror group that claimed responsibility for the murder of the catholic PSNI officer Ronan Kerr last month.
Last Friday the group, which is made up of former IRA members, issued a statement admitting the murder and vowed to up their campaign of terror and violence until the end of “British occupation”.
Gardai are working closely with their PSNI colleagues to assess the ability and likelihood that the group will launch an attack in the south during the queen’s visit and have also asked PSNI detectives to help them identify Murphy’s friend at Trinity College.
Surveillance
A senior source said: “It is safe to say that this is the biggest worry in the entire organisation at the moment. Slab Murphy is free to come and go as he pleases but the fact that a known terrorist was involved in what looks like a surveillance operation is of huge concern.
“To be honest we really need to find out who he was with as soon as possible.
“It is fair to assume that Slab Murphy knows a lot of people hellbent on destroying the peace process and targeting the Queen”
Gardai will be forced to apply to Interpol to run thousands of background checks on foreign nationals to make sure they pose no threat to the queen’s visit.
Extra staff have been drafted into the Dublin Interpol office at Garda headquarters to deal with the flood of security checks.
Senior gardai have decided that every house on the route the Queen will take as part of her official visit will have to be visited by detectives and everybody living there interviewed.
If residents are not home when gardai call a note will be made so that other gardai call to the house again, because officers have to physically meet every resident on the route.
Irish nationals will be subject to background checks through the pulse computer system while non-Irish will be checked through Europol and Interpol.
Gardai do not know how many people have to be quizzed yet but they expect the figure to be tens of thousands.
The controversial ban on garda overtime has been scrapped to allow officers to conduct the background checks after the Department of Justice allocated extra money to the Garda budget. It is expected that the cost of providing security for the visit will be in excess of €25m.
The Queen will travel through the Phoenix Park and down the North Quay up to Croke Park and because of the number of rented apartments along the route detectives are contacting registered landlords to get a list of their tenants.
The Sunday World has also learned that between 30-40 suspected dissidents who are classed as high security risks are already under round-the-clock surveillance by members of the garda special branch.
Gardai have no intelligence that any terrorist group is planning to target the Queen but they are taking no chances and every known dissident is being watched.
They will continue to be monitored 24 hours a day for the next three weeks until Queen Elizabeth II arrives.
