A marzo il rapporto del Police Ombudsman sul massacro di Loughinisland

Il tanto atteso rapporto sugli omicidi del 1994 di Loughinisland sarà pubblicato dell’ufficio del Police Ombudsman alla fine del mese di marzo

Sei uomini – compreso uno di 87 anni – furono assassinati a giugno 1994 quando due membri della UVF aprirono il fuoco all’impazzata all’interno del The Heights Bar, sparando più di 200 proiettili.

Altre cinque persone rimasero ferite.

Le famiglie delle vittime del massacro lealista hanno incontrato venerdì il Police Ombudsman Al Hutchinson per esprimere la loro preoccupazione per il ritardo nella pubblicazione della relazione.

Hanno sempre sostenuto che c’era la collusione con le forze di sicurezza e che un certo numero di agenti di polizia furono coinvolti nel massacro.

Parlando dopo l’incontro, la parlamentare dello Sinn Féin per South Down, Caitriona Ruane, ha detto: “Le famiglie di Loughinisland si sono preentate con la massima dignità e di coraggio sin da quella notte tragica.

“Accolgo con favore il fatto che dopo continui ritardi le famiglie sono state informate che il rapporto sul massacro di Loughlinisland sarà consegnato a metà marzo”.

Margaret Ritchie, leader SDLP e parlamentare per South Down, ha dichiarato: “Le famiglie delle persone uccise hanno aspettato quasi 17 anni per informazioni su come e perché i loro cari sono stati assassinati in modo barbaro.

“Spero che questa relazione ci spiegherà perché questo è accaduto, e porti alla luce ogni prova di collusione, il coinvolgimento dell’MI5 e, soprattutto, consigli i prossimi passi in materia di azioni penali e di ottenimento della giustizia per le famiglie ed i loro cari”.

L’anno scorso, un documento era stato inviato al Public Prosecution Service (Pubblico Ministero) per valutare se sporgere denuncia contro un agente di polizia coinvolto nel caso. Era accusato di aver aiutato gli uomini armati della UVF coinvolti nel massacro.

Il riservista, che era stato sospeso dalla PSNI, era stato interrogato per aver deviato il corso della giustizia e per l’aiuto fornito alla gang dopo la sparatoria.

La decisione era stata di non procedere con l’azione penale.

In un comunicato, il PPS ha detto che “le prove erano insufficienti per fornire una ragionevole probabilità di condanna della persona segnalata”.

Lo scorso anno, UTV ha ottenuto i dettagli dei risultati iniziali dell’inchiesta indipendente da parte del Police Ombudsman.

Si evidenziava come il Police Ombudsman ritenesse ci fossero state grandi carenze nel corso dell’inchiesta iniziale.

I dettagli ottenuti da UTV comprendevano affermazioni secondo cui non erano stati fatti abbastanza sforzi per scoprire l’identità degli assassini, che la polizia non era riuscito a parlare con gente ritenuta di interesse, e che prove forensi fondamentali erano state distrutte.

March date for Loughinisland report

The long-awaited report into the 1994 Loughinisland killings will be published by the Police Ombudsman’s office at the end of next month.

Six men – including an elderly 87-year-old man – were killed when two UVF gunmen sprayed The Heights Bar in the Co Down village with 200 bullets in June 1994.

Five others were injured in the shooting.

Families of the victims of the loyalist massacre met Police Ombudsman Al Hutchinson on Friday to express their concern over the delay in publishing the report.

They have consistently maintained that there was security force collusion and that a number of agents working for the police were involved in the atrocity.

Speaking after the meeting, Sinn Féin South Down MLA Caitríona Ruane said:

“The Loughinisland families have carried themselves with the utmost dignity and courage since that tragic night.

“I welcome the fact that after a needlessly ling delay the families were informed that the Report into the Loughlinisland Massacre will be handed over to the families in mid-March.”

SDLP Leader and South Down MP Margaret Ritchie said: “The families of those murdered have waited nearly 17 years for information about how and why their loved ones were murdered in such a barbaric way.

“I hope that this report will reveal why this happened, and bring to light any evidence of collusion, MI5 involvement and, importantly, recommend the next steps in relation to prosecutions and obtaining justice for the families and their loved ones.”

Last year, a file was sent to the Public Prosecution Service to consider whether to press charges against a police officer involved in the case. He was alleged to have helped the UVF gunmen involved in the massacre.

The reservist, who was suspended by the PSNI, had been questioned over perverting the course of justice and helping the gang make its getaway after the shooting.

The decision was taken not to proceed with the prosecution.

In a statement, the PPS said there was “insufficient evidence to provide a reasonable prospect of conviction of the individual reported.”

Last year, UTV obtained details of the initial findings of the independent investigation by the Police Ombudsman.

They showed that he considered there to have been major failings in the original investigation.

Details obtained by UTV included claims that not enough effort was made to identity the killers, that police failed to speak to people of interest, and that key forensic evidence was destroyed.
