La “sofisticata” bomba da 230 kg (500 libbre) trovata dentro un bidone dei rifiuti posizionato nel furgone vicino a Newry, sarebbe potuta essere usata in un centro città dell’Irlanda del Nord
Alasdair Robinson, Soprintendente Capo, afferma che la bomba era “sofisticata” e avrebbe potuto causare “grande devastazione e perdita di vite”.
Secondo il poliziotto l’ordigno stava venendo spostato a nord verso un altro luogo ma l’attività della polizia ha fatto fallire il piano.
Due sono stati gli allarmi lanciati. Uno ad un ospedale locale e un altro ad un ente benefico, ma Robinson afferma che nessuno è stato sufficiente per trovare l’ordigno.
“Entrambi gli avvertimenti sono stati vaghi ed inadeguati”, ha spiegato. “Le chiamate sono durate 9 secondi e hanno dato un allarme di 45 minuti, un tempo assolutamente irrealistico data la vaghezza delle indicazioni su dove il furgone era stato lasciato”.
Per Robinson l’obiettivo dell’attacco sarebbe potuto essere il centro di una città dell’Irlanda del Nord. Ha aggiunto: “Non speculiamo sulla possibile destinazione del veicolo, tuttavia siamo fiduciosi che la polizia abbia sventato l’attività”.
Il furgone era stato rubato a Maynooth in gennaio e gli erano state applicate targhe false del Donegal. La polizia non dice quale gruppo repubblicano è respnsabile della bomba.
Brian Rea del Policing Board afferma: “Il vero scopo di questo ordigno era di creare morte e distruzione.
“La ripulsione della gente e della politica alla morte dell’agente Kerr mostra chiaramente che la popolazione del Nordirlanda non vuole più altre devastazioni provocate nella nostra comunità e al nostro servizio di polizia”.
La bomba era più grande rispetto a quella esplosa contro il tribunale di Newry a febbraio dello scorso anno.
La facciata del tribunale e degli edifici circostanti furono seriamente danneggiato per lo scoppio della bomba piazzata dai repubblicani.
L’ultimo allarme era stato lanciato giovedì sera. Ha provocato disagi a migliaia di automobilisti a causa della chiusura dell’autostrada in entrambe le direzioni.
Le deviazioni sono state realizzate solamente quando il furgone èstato individuato – ma gli automobilisti hanno ignorato gli avvisi ed il traffico è passato accanto al veicolo sospetto nella mattina di venerdì.
L’A1 adesso è stata riaperta.

The 500lb “sophisticated” bomb found in a wheelie bin inside a van near Newry, Co Down, could have been destined for a town centre in Northern Ireland, police have said.
E District Commander, Chief Superintendent Alasdair Robinson said the bomb was “sophisticated” and could have caused “huge devastation and loss of life”.
He said the device was being transported northwards along the carriageway to another location but police activity foiled the plot.
Two warnings were given, one to a local hospital and another to charity, but Mr Robinson said neither were sufficient.
“Both warnings were inadequate and vague,” he explained. “The calls lasted nine seconds and gave a 45 minute warning, which was wholly unrealistic given the vagueness of directions and where the exactly the van had been left.”
He said a town centre in Northern Ireland could have been the target of the attack, adding: “We will not speculate about the possible destination of the vehicle however we are confident that police disrupted this activity.”
The van was stolen in Maynooth in January and had false Donegal registration plates. Police are not prepared to say which dissident group responsible.
Brian Rea of the Policing Board said: “This pure purpose of this bomb was to cause death and destruction.
“The public and political revulsion at the murder of Constable Kerr clearly shows that the people of Northern Ireland do not want any more devastation inflicted on our community and our police service.”
The bomb is bigger than the device which exploded at Newry Courthouse in February last year.
The front of the building and surrounding properties were extensively damaged when a car bomb planted by dissident republicans exploded.
The alert, which began on Thursday night, caused disruption to thousands of motorists after the dual carriageway was closed in both directions.
The security operation was sparked after two bomb warnings were made to a local charity and hospital.
Cordon signs and diversions were put in place once the van was discovered – but motorists ignored the warnings and traffic passed by the suspicious vehicle on the A1 on Friday morning.
The A1 has now been re-opened.
