Un agente cattolico neo assunto è stato ucciso da una bomba posizionata sotto alla sua vettura ad Omagh, Contea di Tyrone
Gli abitanti hanno parlato di uno scoppio forte quando la bomba è esplosa, poco prima di 16:00.
Resta inteso che l’annuale mezza maratona e una divertente corsa di beneficenza si stavano svolgendo nella cittadina.
I leader politici in Irlanda del Nord e nella Repubblica si sono espressi contro i bombardamenti.
Il presidente dello Sinn Fein Gerry Adams ha dichiarato: “Voglio condannare quanto avvenuto ad Omagh questo pomeriggio.
“Voglio inviare le mie condoglianze alla sua famiglia (del poliziotto) in questo momento estremamente traumatico”.
Il leader dell’Ulster Unionist Party, Tom Elliott, ha condannato “l’attacco vile e malvagio”.
Ha detto: “L’omicidio spietato di questo giovane poliziotto sarà un grande shock per la comunità locale ed i miei pensieri e preghiere sono con la sua famiglia, i suoi amici ed i suoi colleghi in questo momento.”
La leader dell’SDLP Margaret Ritchie ha bollato i responsabili come “nemici d’Irlanda e nemici della pace”.
Ha aggiunto: “Le loro azioni non scioglierannol’Irlanda, ma uniranno soltanto le persone nella condanna del loro assassinio. Questo non solo ha stordito la gente di Omagh, ha sconvolto l’intero Paese”.
Il Taoiseach (primo ministro della Repubblica d’Irlanda) Enda Kenny descritto l’attentato come “un atto odioso e inutile di terrore”.
Ha affermato: “Coloro che lo hanno eseguito vogliono trascinarci indietro alla miseria e al dolore del passato. Agiscono in spregio del popolo irlandese..
“Devono sapere che non potranno mai riuscire a sconfiggere la volontà democratica del popolo”.
Il Tanaiste (vice primo ministro irlandese) e ministro degli Esteri Eamon Gilmore ha aggiunto: “Quelli dietro tale violenza non hanno alcun mandato e che agiscono in contrasto con la volontà democratica del popolo d’Irlanda, sia a nord che a sud”.
Il Segretario Ombra per l’Irlanda del Nord Shaun Woodward ha dichiarato: “Questo attacco malvagio e vile provocherà nausea a tutti in Irlanda del Nord.
“Siamo tutti profondamente in lutto per il coraggioso giovane la cui vita è stata annientata da questo crimine selvaggio”.
Unità di crisi
Il Chief Constable della PSNI Matt Baggott sta tenendo colloqui di crisi presso la sede centrale della polizia a Belfast, dopo l’attentato.
La tempistica della bomba, un pomeriggio di sabato, fa eco all’atrocità dell’agosto 1998 – quando 29 persone e due gemelli non ancora nati furono uccisi da un’autobomba della Real IRA.
La morte dell’ufficiale porta a quattro il numero dei membri delle forze di sicurezza uccisi in Irlanda del Nord dal 2009.
Nel marzo 2009 il poliziotto Stephen Carroll venne ucciso a Craigavon dopo aver risposto ad una chiamata d’emergenza.
Appena due giorni prima, due soldati – i genieri Mark Quinsey e Patrick Azimkar – sono stati freddati fuori della loro caserma di Antrim, mentre ritiravano delle pizze.

PSNI officer killed in Omagh car bomb
A newly-recruited Catholic PSNI officer has been killed in an under-car bomb attack in Omagh, Co Tyrone
Residents reported hearing a loud blast as the bomb went off shortly before 4pm.
It is understood an annual half-marathon and charity fun run were also taking place in the town on Saturday.
Political leaders in Northern Ireland and the Republic have spoken out against the bombing.
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams said: “I want to condemn what happened in Omagh this afternoon.
“I want to send my condolences to his (the officer’s) family at this hugely traumatic time.”
Ulster Unionist leader Tom Elliott condemned “the evil and cowardly attack”.
He said: “The callous murder of this young officer will come as a great shock to the local community and my thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues at this time.”
SDLP leader Margaret Ritchie branded those responsible “enemies of Ireland and enemies of peace”.
She added: “Their actions will not untie Ireland but will only unite people in their condemnation of their murder. This has not only stunned the people of Omagh, it has stunned the entire country.”
Taoiseach Enda Kenny described the bomb attack as a “heinous and pointless act of terror”.
He said: “Those who carried it out want to drag us back to the misery and pain of the past. They are acting in defiance of the Irish people.
“They must know that they can never succeed in defeating the democratic will of the people.”
Tanaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Eamon Gilmore added: “Those behind such violence have no mandate and are acting contrary to the democratic will of the people of Ireland, north and south.”
Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward said: “This evil and cowardly attack will sicken everyone across Northern Ireland.
“We all deeply mourn the brave young man whose life was taken by this savage crime.”
Crisis talks
PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott is holding crisis talks at police headquarters in Belfast after the bombing.
The timing of the bomb attack, on a Saturday afternoon, echoes the August 1998 atrocity – when 29 people and unborn twins were killed in a Real IRA car bomb.
The officer’s death brings to four the number of security force members to be killed in Northern Ireland since 2009.
In March 2009, Police Constable Stephen Carroll was shot dead as he answered a 999 call in Craigavon.
Just two days earlier, two soldiers – Sappers Mark Quinsey and Patrick Azimkar – were gunned down outside their barracks in Antrim, as they collected a pizza delivery.
