Aperti in tutto il Nordirlanda i seggi per le elezioni 2011

Gli elettori si stanno recando alle urne per eleggere i nuovi 108 membri dell’Assemblea di Stormont e 582 consiglieri comunali

Alla gente verrà anche chiesto se ci dovrà essere un cambiamento sul sistema in cui vengono attualente eletti i parlamentari di Westminster.

Più di 1.200.000 persone si sono registrate per votare in Irlanda del Nord. I seggi elettorali sono aperti dalle 7 alle 22.

La polizia annuncia un incremento della presenza delle forze di sicurezza.

La vice comandante della polizia Judith Gillespie dice che la mossa è stata fatta per impedire qualsiasi interferenza nel processo elettorale.

Preferenza

Quando un elettore giunge presso il seggio, deve provare la propria identità per avere accesso alle urne.

Sono ammessi i riconoscimenti tramite passaporto (inglese, irlandese o europeo), una patente di guida con foto rilasciata in Irlanda del Nord, Gran Bretagna o Europa, una carta d’identità elettorale o uno degli Smartpass di Translink rilasciati ai cittadini anziani, ai ciechi e a chi è rimasto disabile in guerra.

Una volta effettuato il riconoscimento, vengono consegnate tre schede elettorali.

La scheda bianca è riservata alle elezioni per l’Assemblea, quella marrone per eleggere i consiglieri comunali.

Sulle schede vanno indicati i numeri delle preferenze (1, 2, 3 e così via) nell’ordine prescelto. Sarà consegnata anche una scheda di colore grigio chiaro per il referendum di Westminster.

Il quesito stampato sulla scheda chiede il sostegno per cambiare il metodo di elezione dei parlamentari a Westminster, dall’attuale sistema chiamato First Past The Post – in cui il più votato ottiene il seggio anche se non ha la maggioranza dei voti – al sistema Alternative Vote – in cui si sommano le varie preferenze fino ad arrivare al 50% dei voti più 1.

Occorre apporre la X per dire se si vuole cambiare sistema oppure no.

Polls open for 2011 Stormont Assembly elections

Voters go to the polls today to elect 108 new members of the Stormont Assembly and 582 new councillors.

People are also being asked to give their view on whether there should be a change in the way Westminster MPs are elected.

More than 1,200,000 people are registered to vote in Northern Ireland. Polling stations open at 0700 BST morning and close at 2200 BST.

A senior police officer said there will be an increased security presence.

Deputy Chief Constable Judith Gillespie said this was to ensure there was no interference in the electoral process.

Preference

When you arrive at the polling station you will need proof of identity in order to vote.

Acceptable forms of ID include a UK, Irish or EU passport, a photographic Northern Ireland, Great Britain or European driving licence, an Electoral Identity card or one of the Translink Smartpass‘s issued to senior citizens, the blind or those with a war disability.

Once you have proven your identity, you will be given three ballot papers.

There is a white paper for the assembly election and a brown one for the council poll.

You should mark these papers with 1, 2, 3 and so on in order of your preference. You will also get a third light grey paper for the Westminster referendum.

This will ask whether you support changing the way MPs are elected from the current First Past The Post system to the Alternative Vote system.

Mark this paper with an X to say either yes or no to the change.
