Un autista di autobus è stato trascinato fuori dal suo mezzo e aggredito durante i riot scoppiati a Newtownabey nella notte di lunedì
Michael Dornan, rappresentante sindacale, ha minacciato di far cessare i servizi di autobus a Newtownabbey a causa dei disordini.
“E’ stato un attacco brutale e vigliacco contro una persona che svolgeva il proprio lavoro.
“Questa gente è salita sull’autobus e ha versato benzina all’interno. Quindi hanno trascinato l’autista fuori dal mezzo e lo hanno picchiato”, ha riferito a Utv.
“L’autista è stato ferito al volto durante l’attacco e noi vogliamo avvertire la popolazione che non possiamo compromettere la sicurezza del nostro personale durante i disordini” ha aggiunto.
I disordini sono scoppiati quando una grande folla si è riunita in O’Neill Road, nei pressi del quartiere di Rathcoole intorno alle 20:30.
Bombe molotov sono state lanciate contro la polizia e un certo numero di fuoristrada della PSNI sono stati danneggiati.
Alcune auto e un autobus sono stati dirottati.
Un portavoce della PSNI ha detto che lunedì sono state effettuate perquisizioni nella zona di Rathcoole e un uomo 34 anni è stato arrestato, per poi essere rilasciato.
Durante le perquisizioni è stata sequestrata della cannabis.
Basil McCrea, parlamentare UUP per l’area, ha detto che circa 250 persone sono state coinvolte nei disordini.
“Gli attacchi a gruppi vulnerabili nei quartieri e la rivolta in generale, sono assolutamente inaccettabili e dovrebbero essere condannate da tutti.
“Chi investirà qui adesso e chi sostituirà il bus bruciato?” chiede McCrea.
Noreen McClelland, consigliere SDLP, dice la gente del quartiere di Rathcoole sono rimasti “scossi” dopo i disordini.
“Molte persone che vivono in questo quartiere erano estremamente spaventate la scorsa notte mentre guardavano con orrore un piccolo gruppo di teppisti effettuare queste distruzioni”, ha detto la signora McClelland.
“Questo è assolutamente inaccettabile e mi appello alla gente affinché collabori con la polizia a individuare i responsabili di questa agitazione. Qualunque sia la motivazione di questa furia, queste azioni sono completamente e assolutamente ingiustificabili”.
Il consigliere dell’Alliance Party per Newtownabbey ha descritto il problema come spregevole.
“Abbiamo bisogno di calma nella zona per consentire alle persone di andare avanti con la loro vita libera da interruzioni e la paura. E’ ignobile che un piccolo numero di persone possa seminare distruzione nella loro comunità.
“I responsabili di questo disturbo devono essere presi e mi appello a chiunque abbia informazioni sugli eventi di ieri sera di contattare immediatamente la polizia.”
Alla PSNI dicono che stanno lavorando per identificare le persone coinvolte nei disordini.
La zona è stata riportata alla calma verso l’1:00 di martedì mattina dopo che la polizia ha lavorato con i rappresentanti della comunità.

Bus driver beaten during Rathcoole riot
A bus driver was trailed from his vehicle and attacked during rioting in Newtownabbey on Monday night.
Unite union representative Michael Dornan has threatened to end the bus services in Newtownabbey because of the disturbances.
“It was a sinister, callous and brutal attack, carried out on a person carrying out his work.
“These people boarded the bus and poured petrol inside. They then trailed him off the bus and beat him,” he told UTV.
“The driver has sustained a facial injury during the attack and we have to warn the general public that we will not allow our members safety to be compromised during civil unrest,” he added.
The trouble erupted when a large crowed gathered at O’Neill Road, near the Rathcoole estate at around 8.30pm.
Petrol bombs were thrown at police and a number of PSNI landrovers were damaged.
Several cars and a bus were hijacked.
A PSNI spokesperson said searches were carried out in the Rathcoole area on Monday and a 34 year-old man was arrested and later released.
Suspected cannabis was seized during the raids.
Ulster Unionist MLA for the area Basil McCrea said around 250 people were involved in the disorder.
“Attacks on vulnerable groups in the local estates and the rioting in general are completely unacceptable and should be condemned by all.
“Who will invest in these areas now and who will replace the burnt out bus?” Mr McCrea said.
SDLP councillor Noreen McClelland says the people of Rathcoole Estate have been left “shaken” following the disorder.
“Many people living in this estate were extremely frightened in their own homes last night as they watched in horror as a small group of thugs carried went about this destructive tirade,” Ms McClelland said.
“This is totally unacceptable and I appeal to people to please cooperate with the police in identifying those responsible for this turmoil. Whatever the motivation for this rampage, these actions are completely and utterly unjustifiable.”
Alliance councillor for Newtownabbey described the trouble as despicable.
“We need calm in the area to allow people to get on with their lives free from disruption and fear. It’s despicable that a small number of people can bring themselves to wreak havoc in their local community.
“Those behind this trouble must be caught and I appeal to anyone with information on last night’s events to contact police immediately.”
The PSNI say they are working to identify those involved in the riots.
The area was reported to be calm at around 1am on Tuesday morning after police worked with community representatives.
