Il Chief Constable ha difeso le tattiche della polizia durante i disordini di Newtownabbey della scorsa settimana
Nessun arresto è stato fatto durante i disordini, provocando le critiche alla gestione della situazione da parte della PSNI.
Tuttavia, durante l’incontro del Policing Board di giovedì, il Chief Constable (Comandante della polizia) Matt Baggott ha difeso la risposta degli agenti e reiterato il pensiero degli ufficiali secondo i quali membri della UVF erano coinvolti nei disordini.
“Sì, c’erano persone coinvolte che possiamo etichettare come uomini della UVF e indubbiamente erano dietro ai disordini”, ha riferito al Policing Board.
“Tuttavia, c’erano altre persone che hanno impiegato molti sforzi nel cercare di calmarli e assicurarsi che non fossero coinvolti nei disordini” ha detto.
Ha anche rivelato che sono state redatte 27 testimonianze e vengono studiati i filmati di telecamere a circuito chiuso provenienti da 9 zone differenti.

Baggott defends Newtownabbey riot response
The Chief Constable has defended police tactics surrounding the rioting in Newtownabbey last week.
No arrests were made during the rioting, leading to criticism of how the PSNI dealt with the situation.
However, at a Policing Board meeting on Thursday, Chief Constable Matt Baggott defended the response and reiterated the PSNI’s belief that members of the UVF were involved in the trouble.
“Yes, there were individuals who could be labelled as UVF involved and undoubtedly were behind those disturbances,” he told the Policing Board.
“However, there were other individuals who put a lot of effort into calming it down and making sure they were not involved in the disorder,” he said.
He also revealed that 27 witness statements have been taken and CCTV footage from nine locations is being studied.
