Basil McCrea in lizza per il posto di leader di Ulster Unionist Party

Basil McCrea ha confermato l’intenzione di partecipare alla competizione per succedere a Sir Reg Empey come leader dell’UUP

Il parlamentare di Lagan Valley ha detto che potrebbe riportare ai vecchi fasti il partito, promuovendo un forte messaggio unitario e con dei cambiamenti alla squadra assembleare.

Anche Tom Elliot, parlamentare di Fermanagh e South Tyrone, ha affermato di voler tentare la scalata alla direzione del partito.

Reg Empey si era dimesso dopo la delusione generale per i risultati delle elezioni per Westminster, dove il partito non aveva conquistato alcun seggio.

Basil McCrea ha detto: “Non puoi riconquistare dei voti se non lavori sul territorio o in Assemblea.

“Mentre non caccerò alcun parlamentare, è chiaro che possiamo fare meglio come gruppo parlamentare, che possiamo essere più rappresentativi sia come età che come genere”.

McCrea afferma di non essere interessato ad avvicinare il partito al DUP.

I membri dell’Ulster Unionist Party si riuniranno il 22 settembre per scegliere il nuovo leader.

Basil McCrea has confirmed he intends to enter the race to succeed Sir Reg Empey as Ulster Unionist Party leader.

The Lagan Valley MLA said he could turn around the party’s fortunes by promoting a strong united message and with changes to its assembly team.

Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Tom Elliot has already said he will challenge for the UUP leadership.

Sir Reg said he would resign following a disappointing general election where the party did not win a single seat.

Mr McCrea said: “You cannot win votes back if you are not working on the ground or delivering in the assembly chamber.

“While I wouldn’t single out one individual MLA, it is clear that we could do better as an assembly grouping, that we certainly could be more representative both in gender and in age.”

Mr McCrea said he was not interested in moving the party closer to the DUP.

Party members will meet on 22 September to select their new leader.
