Belfast: bomba sul davanzale di una casa a New Lodge. Evacuate 50 famiglie

Viable device in north Belfast alert

A mother and her two young sons have escaped injury after a viable explosive device was left outside their home in north Belfast.

Bomba a New LodgeThe alarm was raised by a member of the public, who spotted the device on the windowsill of a house on Stratheden Street in the New Lodge area of the city, at around 7.20am on Thursday.

A security alert was declared and around 50 families – including the mum and her four and seven-year-old boys, and a number of elderly residents – were evacuated from their homes into the freezing cold.

Officers from the army bomb squad attended the scene, and a controlled explosion was later carried out on the suspicious item. It was declared a crude but viable explosive.

No-one was hurt in the incident, but the affected family were said to be left in shock.

During the police operation, arrangements were made by local community workers to provide refreshments and warm shelter at nearby St Kevin’s Parish Hall.

Sinn Féin North Belfast MLA Carál Ní Chuilín said: “Whoever is behind this device needs to seriously consider their actions. They have placed local residents at risk, and two days before Christmas in sub zero temperatures have forced 50 families to leave their homes.

“Whatever the reason behind this it is simply wrong. There is no justification and these actions are not wanted in this community.”

A motive for the incident has not yet been established, but officers say initial inquiries suggest it has no connection to an attack in Maguiresbride, Co Fermanagh, in which a suspected grenade was left outside the home of a policeman.

The PSNI have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
