Elliott, UUP: non sono un dinosauro politico

Tom Elliott, leader dell’Ulster Unionist Party, durante il discorso alla conferenza annuale del partito ha detto di non essere un “dinosauro politico”

Elliott, che ha recentemente sostituito Empey alla guida del partito, è stato definito “tradizionalista” e criticato perché ha affermato che non farà lo spettatore ad un incontro del GAA o al Gay Pride.

Parlando sabato alla conferenza, il parlamentare eletto in Fermanagh & South Tyrone ha detto ce il suo credo politico è findato sul “pluralismo” e sull'”uguaglianza”.

“Il mio unionismo non è determinato dalla religione o dal bagaglio culturale, il mio unionismo è aperto a tutti coloro che vivono in Irlanda del Nord”, ha affermato Elliott. “E’ fondato su pluralismo ed uguaglianza”.

A ottobre, Trevor Ringland si era dimesso dal partito per i commenti di Elliott sul GAA.

Affrontando il problema nel discorso, il leader UUP ha continuato: “Non farò o dirò qualcosa, o andrò da qualche parte solo per farmi fotografare o per avere una pacca sulla spalla da un gruppo di interesse o da una parte dei media.

“Non diluirò il mio credo più profondo semplicemente per pretendere di essere qualcuno che non sono”.

Il governo condiviso tra DUP e Sinn Fein è stato duramente criticato durante il discorso di Elliott. Ha affermato che i due partiti non possono fallire nell’accettare il budget.

“Ciò che abbiamo oggi è un cattivo governo. Dovrebbe essere cooperativo, conensuale, condiviso. Non lo è. E’ lottizzato – è il fallimento del DUP e dello Sinn Fein.

“La prima pietra della democrazia è che un governo deve essere ritenuto responsabile internamente ed esternamente. L’elettorato ha bisogno di una scelta tra un governo in uscita ed una possibile alternativa.

“Si riduce a questo: non si può costruire una consensuale e genuina condivisione del potere in Irlanda del Nord sugli interessi particolari del Sinn Fein e del DUP. Non funziona e non funzionerà”.

La posizione di leader UUP era stata resa vacante da Sir Reg Empey in settembre, dopo il fallimento del partito nel conquistare seggi alle elezioni generali per Westminster.

Parlando della corsa ad assumere il ruolo, in competizione con il collega di partito Basil McCrea, Tom Elliott ha dichiarato: “In certe occasioni è stata una campagna piuttosto vivace, per usare un eufemismo, ma stiamo lavorando insieme”.

Elliott ha chiuso il precedente patto elettorale dell’UUP con i Conservatives, sotto la bandiera dell’UCUNF.

Ma alcuni candidati di alto profilo hanno lasciato il partito quest’anno, tra cui l’onorevole Ringland, Paula Bradshaw – che si è accasata nell’Alliance Party – e Flash Harry – sosia di Freddy Mercury dei Queen – ossia Harry Hamilton.

In vista delle elezioni per Stormont del prossimo maggio, Tom Elliott ha sottolineato l’importanza di mostrare al pubblico un fronte “unito”.

“Gli elettori votano per un partito unito e disciplinato”, ha detto. “Non permetterò che la nostra campagna venga minata dall’interno. La battaglia inizia quando lasceremo questa sala”.

Ulster Unionist leader Tom Elliott has said he is not a “political dinosaur” during his keynote speech at the party’s annual conference on Saturday.

Mr Elliott, who recently took over the position from Sir Reg Empey, has been described as a “traditionalist”, and criticised over comments that he would not attend a GAA match or Gay Pride parade.

Speaking at Saturday afternoon’s conference, the Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA said his political beliefs are founded on “pluralism” and “equality”.

“My unionism is not determined by religion or background, my unionism is open to anyone and everyone who lives in Northern Ireland,” Mr Elliott said.”It is founded on pluralism and equality.”

In October, Trevor Ringland resigned from the party over Mr Elliott’s stance on the GAA.

Addressing the issue in his keynote, the UUP leader continued: “I will not do something or say something, or turn up somewhere just for the sake of a photo opportunity or a pat on the back by an interest group or section of the media.

“I will not dilute or diminish my deep-seated beliefs simply to pretend I am something I am not.”

The power-sharing DUP and Sinn Fein government came in for heavy criticism in Mr Elliott’s speech. He warned that they must not fail to agree the budget.

“What we have today is bad government,” he said. “It’s supposed to be co-operative, consensual, power-sharing government. It’s not. It’s a carve-up – it’s Sinn Fein/DUP failure.

“The foundation stone of democracy is that a government be held to account inside and outside. The electorate need a choice between an outgoing government and a possible alternative.

“It boils down to this: you cannot build a consensual, genuinely power-sharing Northern Ireland upon the particular interests of Sinn Fein and the DUP. It isn’t working and it won’t work.”

Let no-one say that Tom Elliott is some kind of political dinosaur, for I am not.

The position of UUP leader was vacated by Sir Reg Empey in September, following the party’s failure to win any seats in the May General Election.

Speaking of his bid to take on the role, which was fought against fellow party member Basil McCrea, Tom Elliott said: “On occasion it was a fairly lively campaign, to put it mildly, but we are now working together.”

Mr Elliott has since brought to an end the UUP’s previous electoral pact with the Conservatives, under the UCUNF banner.

But a number of high profile candidates have left the party this year, including Mr Ringland, Paula Bradshaw – who defected to the Alliance Party – and former Flash Harry impersonator Harry Hamilton.

Looking ahead to the Stormont elections next May, Tom Elliott stressed the importance of showing the public a “united” front.

“Voters vote for a united, disciplined party,” he said. “I will not allow our campaign to be undermined from within. The battle begins when we leave this hall.”
