Ervine: solo “una questione di tempo” la fine di UVF

Il leader del PUP Brian Ervine appoggia gli ultimi appelli per la fine della violenza da parte di UVF, dicendo che è “solo una questione di tempo” prima che l’organizzazione lasci la scena

Ervine ha parlato dopo le richieste di tale mossa – provenienti anche dal fondatore della UVF Gusty Spence, in una dichiarazione durante un servizio di BBC Spotlight.

“Tutto ciò che possiamo fare è offrire un’alternativa. Tutto quello che possiamo fare è puntare una via d’uscita dal pantano di fornire percorsi di pace nella politica, nella cultura”, ha detto Ervine.

“Siamo andati per quella medesima strada per un certo numero di anni e saremmo lieti se l’UVF prendesse questa strada con noi. Credo sia solo una questione di tempo prima che avvenga”.

Ha poi aggiunto: “La richiesta di Gusty di sciogliersi presenta tre questioni. Dove andrà la UVF? Quando se ne vanno e come se ne vanno? Spero che non verrà detestata dalla propria comunità”.

Ma il giornalista Brian Rowan dice di non essere sicuro che UVF sia in grado di lasciare la scena.

“Non sono sicuro se la dirigenza ha la facoltà di ordinare all’organizzazione di scendere dal palco”, ha detto a UTV. “E penso che, qualunque cosa accada, ci saranno coloro che rimarranno sotto la bandiera UVF e coinvolti in attività che mettono in ridicolo la dichiarazione di fine partita del 2007”.

Tre anni fa l’organizzazione rinunciò alla violenza e si impegnò in un processo di trasformazione da organizzazione paramilitare a organizzazione civile. Nel 2009 l’UVF ha anche smantellato il suo arsenale.

Le richieste di scioglimento dell’organizzazione sono giunte in seguito l’assassinio di Bobby Moffett, avvenuto a Shankill Road in maggio, che secondo la Independent Monitoring Commission era stato avallato dalla leadership UVF ma non avrebbe infranto i termini del loro cessate-il-fuoco del 1994.

Membri di UVF sarebbero inoltre coinvolti in due notti di gravi disordini a Newtownabbey il mese scorso, quando un uomo armato è stato avvistato per le strade. Secondo le fonti, la polizia sta esaminando anche un collegamento di UVF con gli attacchi tramite pipe bomb avvenuti a West Belfast la scorsa settimana.

Gli incidenti hanno lasciato il , considerato da tutti come politicamente legato sia alla UVF che al Red Hand Commando, in tumulto.

Ma il lavoratore comunitario Raymond McCord ha detto che gli appelli per la pace cadono “nel vuoto”.

“Queste richieste non significano nulla per questi terroristi e trafficanti di droga”, ha affermato McCord del gruppo HELP – il cui figlio, Raymond Jnr, fu assassinato dalla UVF – ha detto a UTV.

“Si tratta di soldi, di potere e di terrorizzare la comunità”.

End to UVF ‘a matter of time’ – Ervine

PUP leader Brian Ervine has backed the latest calls appealing for an end to UVF violence, saying it is “only a matter of time” before the organisation leaves the stage.

Mr Ervine was speaking after calls for such a move – including from the UVF’s founder Gusty Spence, in a statement to a BBC Spotlight documentary.

“All we can do is offer an alternative. All we can do is point a way out of the morass to provide pathways of peace into politics, into culture,” Mr Ervine said.

“We have been going down that road now for a number of years and we would be delighted if the UVF came along that road with us. I believe that is only a matter of time before that happens.”

He added: “Gusty’s statement to disband presents three questions. Where do the UVF go? When do they go and how do they go? I hope they don’t go as looked upon and loathed by their own community.”

But journalist Brian Rowan says he is not sure whether the UVF is capable of leaving the stage.

“I’m not sure if the leadership has the authority to order the organisation off the stage,” he told UTV. “And I think, whatever happens, there will be those who will remain under the UVF banner and involved in activities which make a mockery of the endgame statement of 2007.”

Three years ago, the organisation renounced violence and committed to a process of transformation from a paramilitary to a civilian organisation. In 2009 the UVF also took the step of full decommissioning.

The calls for the organisation to disband come in the wake of the murder of Bobby Moffett on the Shankill Road in May, which the Independent Monitoring Commission said was sanctioned by the UVF leadership but did not break the terms of their 1994 ceasefire.

UVF members are also believed to have been involved in two nights of serious rioting in Newtownabbey last month, when a gunman was spotted on the streets. According to sources, police are also investigating a UVF link to pipe bomb attacks in west Belfast last week.

The incidents have left the , which is broadly regarded as being politically linked to both the UVF and Red Hand Commando, in turmoil.

But community worker Raymond McCord has said the calls for peace will only fall “on deaf ears”.

“These calls don’t mean anything to these terrorists and drug dealers”, Mr McCord from support group HELP – whose son, Raymond Jnr, was murdered by the UVF – told UTV.

“It’s about money and power and terrorising the community.”
