Esplode autobomba davanti al tribunale di Newry

La polizia ha parlato di “miracolo” per l’assenza di morti e feriti dallo scoppio di un’autobomba vicino al tribunale di Newry, Contea di Down

Gli agenti stavano evacuando l’area quando la bomba è esplosa. Erano stati chiamati per la presenza di una macchina sospetta vicino al tribunale.

Il Segretario di Stato per l’Irlanda del Nord, Shaun Woodward, ha condannato l’attacco ed elogiato i poliziotti per il loro coraggio.

Secondo Mark Simpson di BBC si tratta dell’ultimo attacco dei repubblicani che si oppongono al processo di pace.

Considerevole esplosione

L’Ispettore Capo Sam Cordnor ha detto: “E’ solo per un fortunato miracolo che nessuno è rimasto ucciso o ferito.

“Le nostre indagini e l’esame dell’area saranno molto estensive, e chiedo a chiunque abbia informazioni, non importa quanto piccole, di contattare gli investigatori a Newry”.

Lo scoppio ha danneggiato i portoni del tribunale.

Woodward, attualmente negli Stati Uniti, ha detto di essere contento per la mancanza di feriti, ma che i responsabili sono “gente che desidera destabilizzare il processo politico”.

Ha affermato: “Questo è uno spaventoso attacco di un gruppo molto ristretto di persone che rifiutano di accettare che la pace sta funzionando in Irlanda del Nord”.

Il parlamentare SDLP per Newry e Armagh, Dominic Bradley, ha condannato i responsabili.

“E’ stata una considerevole esplosione. L’ho sentita molto bene da dove vivo – oltre tre chilometri lontano”, ha affermato.

“Sono stato sulla scena poco dopo e posso dire che la gente del posto era assolutamente disgustata.

“Da quello che ho saputo, c’è stato un avvertimento di soli 5 minuti e la polizia stava ancora evacuando la gente da New Street/Canal Street quando la bomba è esplosa.

“Avremmo potuto tranquillamente vedere feriti o esiti peggiori questa sera e non è merito degli attentatori il fatto che non ci siano stati feriti.

“La gente sta dicendo di averne avuto abbastanza di questo genere di cose durante la campagna dei Provos, era sbagliato e senza senso allora e lo è anche adesso”.

Rapida azione

Il parlamentare DUP William Irwin ha detto che la bomba è “l’azione vigliacca di chi vuole riportare l’Irlanda del Nord nel passato”.

Per il politico “serve una condanna in tutta la comunità da parte di tutti coloro che credono nella democrazia e si oppongono al terrorismo.

“La rapida azione della polizia nell’assicurare l’evacuazione dell’area deve essere lodata e ancora una volta serve a ricordare la minaccia affrontata quotidianamente dalla nostra polizia”, ha concluso.

Conor Murphy, parlamentare di Westminster per lo Sinn Fein, ha riferito: “Il fatto che siamo coinvolti nel processo di trasferimento dei poteri su polizia e giustizia e che ci sia stata un attacco ad un tribunale non sfuggirà alla popolazione.

“Queste persone vogliono riportarci indietro e far tornare l’esercito britannico per le strade”.

Per il parlamentare Danny Kennedy, Ulster Unionist Party, la bomba è “la prova di una situazione deteriorata nella sicurezza in Irlanda del Nord.

“Ci sono stati alcuni incidenti molto gravi – questo probabilmente è il più grave degli ultimi tempi”, ha affermato.

“Rappresenta un chiaro attacco ai servizi di sicurezza e alle istituzioni governative.

“Mostra un preoccupante livello di capacità ragiunta dai repubblicani”.

Giunge a pochi giorni dal ritrovamento di una bomba di mortaio, abbandonata vicino alla stazione di polizia di Keady, a sole 20 miglia da Newry.

Lo scorso ottobre, ci fu un grande allarme sicurezza sempre presso il tribunale di Newry e gli artificieri dell’esercito giunsero per analizzare un veicolo sospetto abbandonato poco lontano.

Fu dichiarato che si trattava di una finta autobomba.

Le udienze programmate presso il tribunale di Newry sono state trasferite ad Armagh.

Car bomb explodes at Newry courthouse

Police say it is a “miracle” no-one was killed or injured by a car bomb near a courthouse in Newry, County Down.

Officers were evacuating the area when the bomb went off on Monday evening. They had been called after reports of a suspicious car near the court.

Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward condemned the attack and paid tribute to the officers’ bravery.

The BBC’s Mark Simpson said it was the latest attack by dissident republicans opposed to the peace process.

‘Substantial blast’

Chief Inspector Sam Cordnor said: “It is only by sheer miracle that nobody was killed or injured.

“Our investigations and examination of the area will be full and extensive, and I would appeal to anyone with information, no matter how small, to contact detectives at Newry.”

The explosion damaged the gates of the courthouse.

Mr Woodward, who is in the US, said he was pleased nobody had been hurt, but those behind the attack were “people who want to destabilise the political process”.

He said: “This is an appalling attack by a very small group of people who refuse to accept that peace is working in Northern Ireland.”

SDLP Newry and Armagh assembly member Dominic Bradley condemned those who were responsible for the bomb.

“This was a substantial blast which sounded loud where I live – the best part of two miles away,” he said.

“I was on the scene shortly afterwards and I can say that local people were absolutely disgusted.

“As far as I could make out, there was only a five-minute warning and police were in the process of evacuating people from New Street/Canal Street when the bomb went off.

“We could easily have been looking at serious casualties or worse this evening and it is no credit at all to the bombers that as far as is known there were no injuries.

“People are saying that they got enough of this sort of thing during the Provo campaign, it was wrong and senseless then and it is wrong now.”

‘Swift actions’

DUP Newry and Armagh assembly member William Irwin said the bomb was “a cowardly action by those who want to drag Northern Ireland back to the past”.

He said it “must be condemned across the community by all those who believe in democracy and oppose terrorism”.

“The swift actions of police in ensuring that the area was evacuated must be praised and once again serve of a reminder of the threat which our police officers face daily,” he said.

Local Sinn Fein MP Conor Murphy said: “The fact that we’re in the process of devolving policing and justice powers and there’s an attack on a courthouse will not be lost on people.

“These people are trying to drag us backwards and ensure we have the British army back on the streets.”

Local Ulster Unionist assembly member Danny Kennedy said the bomb was “proof of a deteriorating security situation in Northern Ireland”.

“There have been a number of very serious incidents – this is by far probably the most serious recently,” he said.

“It represents a clear attack on security services and government institutions.

“It shows a very worrying level of capability that these dissidents now have.”

It comes days after a mortar bomb was abandoned near a police station in the village of Keady, about 20 miles away.

Last October, Newry courthouse was the scene of a major security alert after an Army bomb disposal team was sent to examine a suspicious vehicle abandoned nearby.

It was later declared to be an elaborate hoax.

Hearings scheduled for Newry courthouse on Tuesday have been moved to Armagh.
