Un’auto esplosa fuori da una stazione della polizia a Derry conteneva 200 libbre di esplosivo artigianale
Nessuno è stato ferito durante l’attacco, avvenuto intorno alle 3:20 di questa notte, ma diversi negozi sono stati gravemente danneggiati dall’esplosione.
La polizia ha detto che la bomba è stata caricata su un taxi e l’autista costretto a guidare fino alla stazione da uomini armati.
Il comandante di divisione Steve Martin ha detto che è stata una fortuna non avere vittime perché la bomba sarebbe esplosa 20 minuti prima rispetto al tempo lasciato dall’avvertimento.
Ha detto che due uomini hanno assaltato un taxi nel Bogside. Il conducente è stato portato Glenfada Park, dove è stata caricata in macchina la bomba.
Il conducente è stato quindi obbligato a guidare fino alla stazione di polizia di Strand Road sotto la minaccia di una pistola e se si fosse rifiutato gli avrebbero sparato.
Secondo Martin ha detto che erano stati avvertiti dell’esplosione dell’ordigno in 45 minuti, tuttavia, erano passati solo 23 minuti quando l’auto è esplosa.
Ha anche rivelato che un poliziotto ha rischiato la propria vita quando è passato per due volte accanto alla bomba, mentre portava al sicuro il personale di un vicino fast food.
Codardia
Il primo ministro ed il suo vice hanno condannato l’attacco.
Peter Robinson ha detto di essere grato non ci sia stata perdita di vite umane.
“L’utilizzo di un tassista per portare la bomba mostra la codardia dei responsabili dell’attacco e le mie simpatie sono con l’autista e con quanti sono divenuti un obiettivo” ha affermato.
Martin McGuinness ha detto coloro che hanno progettato l’attacco sono un “imbarazzo” per la gente di Derry.
“Cercano di minare il processo di pace, vogliono minare strategia di pace del Sinn Fein”, ha detto.
“Se pensano di distruggere le istituzioni politiche votate dal popolo d’Irlanda, se pensano di poter distruggere il rapporto di lavoro che ho con Peter Robinson, se pensano di minare il processo di pace allora vivono tra le nuvole”.
Anche il ministro della giustizia dell’Irlanda del Nord David Ford ha condannato i responsabili.
“Hanno concesso pochissimo tempo alla polizia per evacuare le persone che vivono nelle immediate vicinanze”, ha detto.
“E’ stato, francamente, un attacco al servizio di polizia dell’intera comunità e quindi un attacco controa tutte le persone di Derry.”
Il ministro irlandese degli Affari esteri, Michael Martin, ha detto di deplorare “un atto di sconsiderato, una criminalità insensata che mette a rischio la vita della comunità e che agisce solo per rafforzare le divisioni su questa isola”.
Il parlamentare dello SDLP Mark Durkan ha detto che il bombardamento è stato “un codardo, atto pericoloso e volgare”.
“I responsabili di questo episodio non hanno ottenuto nulla, e questa campagna di violenza non otterrà nulla”, ha detto.
Panico
Lotfi Jalloul, il cui negozio di kebab è stato distrutto nell’esplosione, stava pulendo quando ha visto la macchina arrivare alla stazione di polizia.
“Ho pensato che fosse un tassista giunto a raccogliere un passeggero, ma dopo circa 15 minuti più tardi, siamo stati evacuati dalla polizia,” ha detto.
“C’era un sacco di panico. Ho lasciato i soldi in cassa e non ha nemmeno avuto la possibilità di tirare giù le serrande – grazie a Dio siamo usciti di lì, non posso credere che siamo ancora vivi”.
Ha detto di aver saputo che il suo negozio è stato distrutto dall’esplosione, ma di non aver potuto vedere i danni causati perché la zona rimane cordonata.
Conor Kelly, che vive in un condominio nei pressi della stazione di polizia, ha parlato di una esperienza terrificante.
“Ero ancora sveglio e stavo leggendo quando ho sentito un rumore molto forte, come un tuono, e ho visto i detriti volare davanti alla mia finestra”, ha detto.
“Non ci sono stati allarmi o tentativi di evacuare l’edificio”.
Ha detto che la facciata di un fast food era stata ridotta “a brandelli” e altri edifici avevano le finestre divelte.
Nel mese di maggio, una bomba di mortaio era stata sparata contro la stessa stazione di polizia. Colpì un muro, ma non esplose.
L’attacco arriva poche settimane dopo Derry è stata nominata da Città della Cultura del Regno Unito nel 2013.

200lb of explosives in Derry car bomb
A car that exploded outside a police station in Londonderry contained 200lb of homemade explosives, police have said.
No-one was injured in the attack which happened at 0320 BST but several businesses were badly damaged in the blast.
Police said the bomb was loaded into a hijacked taxi and the driver ordered at gunpoint to drive to the station.
Divisional Commander Steve Martin said it was fortunate no-one was killed because the device went off more than 20 minutes before a warning said it would.
He said two men hijacked a taxi in the Bogside. The driver was taken to Glenfada Park where the bomb was loaded into the car.
The driver was then ordered at gunpoint to drive to Strand Road police station and warned he would be shot if he did not.
Supt Martin said they had been warned the device would go off in 45 minutes, however only 23 minutes had passed when the car exploded.
He also revealed that a policeman risked his own life when he walked past the bomb twice to bring to safety staff at a nearby fast food shop.
‘Cowardice’
The first and deputy first ministers have condemned the attack.
Peter Robinson said he was thankful there was no loss of life.
“Using a taxi driver to deliver the device shows the cowardice of those behind the attack and my sympathies are with him and all those targeted,” he said.
Martin McGuinness said those who planned the attack were an “embarrassment” to the people of Derry.
“It’s about trying to undermine the peace process, about trying to undermine Sinn Fein’s peace strategy,” he said.
“If they think they will destroy the political institutions the people of Ireland voted for, if they think they’re going to destroy the working relationship I have with Peter Robinson, if they think they will undermine the peace process they are living in cloud cuckoo land.”
Northern Ireland justice minister David Ford also condemned those responsible.
“It allowed very little time for police to evacuate people who live in the immediate area,” he said.
“It was frankly an attack on the police service of the whole community and therefore an attack on everybody in Derry.”
The Irish minister for foreign affairs, Micheal Martin, said he deplored “an act of reckless, senseless criminality which put at risk the lives of the community and which only acts to reinforce divisions on this island”.
SDLP MP Mark Durkan said the bombing was “a cowardly, dangerous and vulgar act”.
“Those responsible for this incident have achieved nothing and this campaign of violence will achieve nothing,” he said.
‘Panic’
Lotfi Jalloul, whose kebab shop was destroyed in the blast, had been cleaning up for the night when he saw the car arrive at the police station.
“I thought he was a taxi driver picking up a passenger but about 15 minutes later, we were evacuated by the police,” he said.
“There was a lot of panic. I left the money in the till and didn’t even get the chance to pull down the shutters – thank God we got out of there, I can’t believe we’re still alive.”
He said he had been told his business had been destroyed by the explosion but had not yet been able to see what damage was caused because the area remains cordoned off.
Conor Kelly, who lives in an apartment block near the police station, said it had been a terrifying experience.
“I was still awake and reading when I heard an enormous noise like thunder and saw debris flying past my window,” he said.
“There were no alarms or attempts to evacuate the building.”
He said the front of a fast food outlet had been “ripped to shreds” and other buildings had windows blown out.
In May, a mortar bomb was fired at the same police station. It struck a wall but failed to explode.
The attack comes just weeks after Derry was picked to be UK City of Culture in 2013.
