Il presidente dello Sinn Fein Gerry Adams è stato il più votato nella circoscrizione di Louth, ottenendo il seggio al primo conteggio
L’elezione del presidente significa che lo Sinn Fein ha già conquistato due seggi alle elezioni generali irlandesi.
Adams annunciò a novembre di volersi dimettere da parlamentare di West Belfast a Westminster e di presentarsi come candidato nella Repubblica d’Irlanda
La sua intenzione è di essere una “voce forte” per i lavoratori nel parlamento irlandese.
“Ci siamo presentati a questa elezione, abbiamo esposto i nostri progetti molto, molto chiaramente” ha affermato.
“Penso che i voti in tutto lo Stato mostrano una notevole quantità di persone che sostengono la posizione che abbiamo assunto”.
Dopo le critiche sulla sua prestazione nella discussione sulle questioni economiche, ha smentito che ciò possa riaffiorare nel Dail.
“Non ho assolutamente alcuna preoccupazione su questo” ha detto.
“Le persone che mi stanno sfidando sulla nostra posizione economica sono le persone che hanno portato l’economia in ginocchio”.
Ha rifiutato di entrare nella diatriba sulla guida del partito in parlamento.
Ha aggiunto: “E’ un privilegio enorme e io lo darò il 100% a qualsiasi titolo io lo rappresenti (lo Sinn Fein) nel Dail”.
In precedenza, si è congratulato con leader del Fine Gael Enda Kenny sulla prospettiva che diventi Taoiseach (primo ministro).
“Se Enda diventerà Primo Ministro, gli auguro ogni bene”, ha detto Adams.
“Noi lo sosterremo quando farà le cose che pensiamo siano buone e progressive e ci opporremo con i denti e con le unghie quando farà cose che non sono nel bene comune”.
La vittoria di Adams è la secondo per lo Sinn Fein alle elezioni generlai, dopo che Pearse Doherty si è imposto nella circoscrizione di Donegal South-West, mantenendo il seggio conquistato nelle elezioni suppletive dello scorso anno.
Nel complesso, il Sinn Fein prevede di realizzare comodamente la sua migliore prestazione in una elezione generale irlandese dell’epoca moderna.

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams has topped the poll in the Louth constituency, winning a seat on the first count.
His election means Sinn Fein has so far won two seats in the Irish election.
Mr Adams announced in November that he had decided to step down as MP for West Belfast and stand for election in the Irish Republic.
He said that he would be a “strong voice” for working people in the Irish parliament.
“We went out in this election, we set out our stall very, very clearly,” he said.
“I think the votes across the state show a significant amount of people support the position we have taken up.”
After criticism of his performance in debating economic issues, he dismissed claims that this might resurface in the Dail.
“I don’t have any concerns at all about that,” he said.
“The people who are challenging me on our economic position are the people who brought the economy to its knees.”
He refused to be drawn on whether he would lead the party in parliament.
He added: “It is a huge privilege and I will give it 100% in whatever capacity I represent them (Sinn Fein) in the Dail.”
Earlier, he congratulated Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny on the prospect of becoming taoiseach (prime minister).
“If Enda becomes taoiseach, I wish him well,” Mr Adams said.
“We will support him when he is doing things that we think are good and progressive and we will oppose him tooth and nail when he is doing things that are not in the common good.”
Mr Adams’ victory was the second for Sinn Fein in the general election, after Pearse Doherty topped the poll in Donegal South-West to retain the seat he won for the party in a by-election at the end of last year.
Overall, Sinn Fein is expected to comfortably record its best performance in an Irish general election in the modern era.
