La famiglia del giovane di North Belfast, ucciso dai soldati inglesi nel 1971 per presunto coinvolgimento con l’IRA, ha accolto favorevolmente il rapporto dell’Historical Enquiries Team che prova la sua innocenza
Quattro anni dopo l’incidente, il Luogotenente clifford Burrage si prese la responsabilità per l’omicidio, dicendo di aver agito perché McLarnon era armato di pistole e si trovava tra uomini armati.
L’indagine eseguita dall’HET ora rivela che McLarnon era una vittima innocente, mentre Burrage non era il soldato che sparò contro il giovane.
Infatti, si legge nel rapporto, la vittima “quasi sicuramente” fu assassinata dal membro di un’altra pattuglia dell’esercito britannico.
Una portavoce del Pat Finucane Centre, dove i risultati sono stati rilasciati nella mattina di mercoledì, ha indicato il caso come “straordinario”.
“Fin dalla morte di Michael la sua famiglia ha sempre professato la sua innocenza e ora sono felici che la sua innocenza sia stata ufficialmente e categoricamente riconosciuta”, ha affermato Maggie O’Conor.
“Questo è uno straordinario rapporto in cui l’HET ha indagato sui fatti e concluso che i fatti di pubblico dominio e le indagini furono irrevocabilmente viziati.
“I risultati chiave del rapporto di HET sono che il soldato che ha affermato di aver sparato a Michael non ha in realtà aperto il fuoco ed in secondo luogo Michael sarebbe stato ucciso, con molta probabilità, da membri di un’altra pattuglia dell’esercito britannico che spararono anche a John Copeland.”
Il rapporto iniziale sull’uccisione fu effettuato dalla Royal Military Police.
Secondo il Pat Finucane Centre, nel rapporto iniziale non mise mai in discussione la storia di Burrage, anche se due testimonianze la mettevano in dubbio.
La O’Conor ha bollato l’indagine della RMP come “profondamente sbagliata”, aggiungendo che “l’inchiesta della HET e la revisione ha chiaramente rilevato che le storie raccontate da Burrage nel corso degli anni non si adattano ai fatti”.

Victim of soldier shooting was innocent
The family of a north Belfast man, who was killed by soldiers in 1971 for suspected IRA involvement, has welcomed a Historical Enquiries Team report which proves him innocent.
Four years after the incident, Lieutenant Clifford Burrage claimed responsibility, saying he had acted because Mr McLarnon was carrying a gun and was amongst an armed gang.
An investigation by the HET has now revealed that Mr McLarnon was an innocent victim, while Mr Burrage was not the soldier involved in the attack.
Instead, the report claims, the victim was “most likely” killed by a member of another British Army patrol.
A spokesperson at the Pat Finucane Centre, where the findings were published on Wednesday morning, called the case “remarkable”.
“Since Michael’s killing family and family representatives have protested his innocence and they are pleased that his innocence has officially and categorically been recognised,” caseworker Maggie O’Conor said.
“This is a remarkable report in that the HET has investigated the facts and have concluded that the facts belie the information in the public domain and that the investigation was irrevocably flawed.
“The key findings by the HET are that the soldier who claimed to have shot Michael did not in fact shoot him and secondly that Michael was most likely shot by members of another British army patrol that also shot John Copeland.”
The initial report into the shooting was carried out by the Royal Military Police at the time.
According to the Pat Finucane Centre, it did not question Mr Burrage’s story even though two eye witness accounts put it in doubt.
Ms O’Conor called the RMP investigation “deeply flawed”, adding “the HET investigation and review has clearly found that the stories Burrage has told over the years do not fit the facts”.
