Il funerale di Ronan Kerr

Il cardinale Sean Brady ha affermato che lo spettacolo senza precedenti di unità contro i dissidenti deve essere “un momento decisivo nel cammino verso la riconciliazione e la pace”

La cittadina di Beragh si è bloccata per il funerale della recluta della polizia di 25 anni, ucciso a Omagh nel pomeriggio di sabato.

In una scena altamente simbolica, scolari, i compagni di squadra nei GAA Beragh Red Knights e decine di agenti di polizia stavano spalla a spalla fuori dalla chiesa dell’Immacolata Concezione.

Hanno formato un picchetto d’onore intorno alla bara della giovane recluta, che è stata portata dal presidente della GAA Christy Cooney, dal manager di Tyrone Mickey Harte e dal capitano di Tyrone Brian Dooher ed è stata consegnata ai colleghi della PSNI per il tratto di strada fino al cimitero.

Il corteo funebre è stato guidato da Nuala Kerr, la madre di Ronan, dai suoi fratelli e dalla sorella.

Il Primate of All-Ireland ha detto a quanti erano riuniti all’interno della Chiesa nel paese d’origine della famiglia Kerr che Ronan ha “giocato un ruolo nella costruzione della pace”.

“Non ci devono essere dubbi sul fatto che l’uccisione di Ronan Kerr era del tutto ingiustificata. E’ stata una cattiva azione, un oltraggio a Dio e un rifiuto completo della convinzione che la vita umana è sacra”, ha detto.

“Oggi, mentre onoriamo il coraggio di questo valoroso giovane, possiamo definire questo un momento cruciale della nostra vita. Non dobbiamo mai essere compiaciuti di aver scelto bene e rifiutato il male. Decidiamo di fare tutto quanto in nostro potere per realizzare il futuro più luminoso che i giovani di questa terra meritano”.

Il Cardinale Brady ha esortato gli astanti a far convenire un messaggio di pace alla nuova generazione.

“Genitori e nonni, vi prego, chiedete ai vostri figli e ai vostri nipoti, di non essere coinvolti con la violenza”.

I leader politici e i comandanti di polizia di entrambi i lati del confine sono stati tra coloro che hanno partecipato alla messa funebre. In una scena emotiva, il Chief Constable della PSNI Matt Baggott ha stretto la mano a Mickey Harte al di fuori della cappella.

Il primo ministro Peter Robinson ed il vice primo ministro Martin McGuinness, insieme al presidente dello Sinn Fein Gerry Adams, al leader dell’UUP Tom Elliott, la leader dello SDLP Margaret Ritchie, al leader di Alliance Party e ministro della Giustizia David Ford, sono stati raggiunti dal Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

E’ stata la prima messa cattolica cui hanno partecipato i leader di DUP e UUP, mentre la presenza di McGuinness e Adams al funerale di un poliziotto sarebbe stato inimmaginabile in passato. Questo ha segnato anche la prima visita ufficiale di Enda Kenny in Irlanda del Nord, come primo ministro della Repubblica.

Erano presenti anche Alan Harper, l’Arcivescovo di Armagh della Chiesa d’Irlanda, il reverendo Norman Hamilton, moderatore della Chiesa presbiteriana, e il reverendo Paul Kingston, presidente della Chiesa metodista.

Padre John Skinnader, che ha tenuto l’omelia, ha reso omaggio “all’eccezionale coraggio” di Ronan Kerr e al suo “amore per la vita”.

Padre Skinnader ha detto che aveva parlato poco tempo fa con la giovane recluta, mentre era in servizio.

“Vedendolo seduto al volante della macchina della polizia lo scorso fine settimana – ho pensato tra me – è il simbolo della nuova Irlanda del Nord”.

Domenica Nuala Kerr, madre dal cuore spezzato, si è appellata ai fratelli cattolici chiedendo loro di alzarsi, farsi contare e non essere dissuasi dall’aderire alla PSNI.

Molte persone si sono riunite nel centro di Belfast per una manifestazione per la pace organizzata dai sindacati per protestare contro l’uccisione provocata dai repubblicani, mentre il funerale stava avvenendo.

Una passeggiata per la pace si terrà domenica ad Omagh, per consentire alle persone di mostrare ulteriormente la loro disgusto per l’omicidio.

Libri di condoglianze sono stati aperti in città e in tutta l’Irlanda del Nord per l’agente Ronan Kerr, sepolto presso la Chiesa di San Patrizio a Drumaduff.

Mourners unite for Kerr funeral

Cardinal Séan Brady told mourners at the funeral of murdered Constable Ronan Kerr that the unprecedented show of unity against dissidents needs to be made “the defining moment in the journey towards reconciliation and peace”.

The small Tyrone village of Beragh ground to a halt for the funeral of the 25-year-old police recruit, who was killed in a dissident car bomb attack in Omagh on Saturday afternoon.

In highly symbolic scenes, local schoolchildren, Ronan’s GAA Beragh Red Knights’ teammates and scores of police officers stood shoulder to shoulder outside the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

They formed a guard of honour around the young recruit’s coffin, which was carried by GAA President Christy Cooney, Tyrone manager Mickey Harte and Tyrone captain Brian Dooher and was handed to PSNI colleagues for the final stretch to the churchyard.

The funeral procession was led by Ronan’s grieving mother Nuala, his brothers and sister.

The Primate of All Ireland told those gathered inside the Church in the Kerr family’s home village that Ronan had “played a part in building the peace”.

“Let there be no doubt that the killing of Ronan Kerr, was totally unjustified. It was an evil deed, an offence against God and a complete rejection of the belief that human life is sacred”, he said.

“Today, as we honour the courage of this valiant young man, may we all resolve to make this a defining moment in our own lives. We must never become complacent about choosing good and rejecting evil. Let us resolve to do everything in our power to bring about the brighter future which the young people of this land deserve.”

Cardinal Brady urged mourners to pass a message of peace onto the new generation.

“Parents and grandparents, I beg you, plead with your children and with your grandchildren, not to get involved with violence.”

Political leaders and police chiefs from both sides of the border were among those who attended the funeral mass. In an emotional scene, PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott shook hands with Mickey Harte outside the chapel.

First Minister Peter Robinson and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, along with Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams, UUP leader Tom Elliott, SDLP leader Margaret Ritchie, Alliance leader and Justice minister David Ford, were joined by Taoiseach Enda Kenny for the service.

It was the first Catholic mass attended by both the DUP and UUP leaders, while the presence of Mr McGuinness and Mr Adams at the funeral of a police officer would have been unimaginable in the past. This also marked Enda Kenny’s first official visit to Northern Ireland as Irish Premier.

Also present were Archbishop Alan Harper, Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh; the Rev Norman Hamilton, moderator of the Presbyterian Church; and the Rev Paul Kingston, president of the Methodist Church.

Father John Skinnader, who delivered the homily, paid tribute to Ronan’s “exceptional courage” and his “love of life”.

Fr Skinnader said that he had spoken to the young recruit recently while he was on duty.

“Seeing him sitting behind the wheel of the police car last weekend – I thought to myself – there is the symbol of the new Northern Ireland.”

On Sunday, Pc Kerr’s heartbroken mother Nuala appealed to fellow Catholics to stand up and be counted and not be dissuaded from joining the PSNI.

Large crowds also gathered in Belfast city centre for a trade-union organised peace rally to protest against the dissident republican killing, as the funeral was taking place.

A peace walk will be held in Omagh on Sunday to allow people to further register their revulsion at his murder.

Books of condolence have been opened in the town and across Northern Ireland for Constable Kerr, who was buried at the Church of St Patrick in Drumaduff.
