Il Segretario di Stato incontrerà le famiglie delle vittime di Ballymurphy

Owen Paterson deve incontrare le famiglie delle 11 persone assassinate dal Reggimento Paracadutisti a West Belfast nel 1971

Le famiglie, tutte della zona di Ballymurphy, stanno chiedendo a gran voce un’inchiesta internazionale indipendente sulle morti del Ballymurphy Massacre.

Durante l’operazione di internamento senza processo (Operazione Demetrius) da parte del governo britannico nel quartiere repubblicano ci furono 11 vittime in tre giorni. Tra di loro anche un prete cattolico e la madre di otto figli.

Le truppe affermarono di aver aperto il fuoco dopo essere divenuti bersaglio dei repubblicani.

John Taggart, il cui padre Danny fu tra le vittime, descrive l’incontro con Owen Paterson come “molto importante”.

“Speriamo sia l’inizio del percorso per mettere in moto il meccanismo per un’inchiesta indipendente”, ha affermato.

“Ci aspettiamo delle scuse e spero ciò avvenga, ma una scusa è una cosa vuota.

“(Paterson) deve fare la cosa giusta per le famiglie di Ballymuprhy”.

Paterson meets victims’ families

Secretary of State Owen Paterson is to meet the families of 11 people shot dead by the Parachute Regiment in west Belfast in 1971.

The families, from the Ballymurphy area, are calling for an independent international inquiry into the deaths.

A Catholic priest and a mother-of-eight were among those killed over a three-day period in the city.

The troops claimed they opened fire after being shot at by republicans.

John Taggart’s father Danny was among the victims.

He described the meeting with Owen Paterson as “very important”.

“Hopefully when we go it will be to start to put in place the mechanism for an independent investigation,” he said.

“We would expect an apology and hope that is what it is but an apology is an empty thing.

“He needs to do the right thing for the Ballymurphy families.”
