La coppia di Craigavon “forse conosceva” il killer

Craigavon couple ‘may have known’ killer

The couple murdered in their Craigavon home may have known their killer, police have said.

Omicidio a Craigavon | Craigavon murderThe bodies of 56-year-old Hugh McGeough and his partner Jacqueline, 44, were found at Legahory Court by their son on Monday evening.

The pair were shot in the head.

“I believe they knew the person, or persons who murdered them,” the lead detective in the investigation, Chief Inspector Richard Harkness, said. “That is based on my crime scene assessment.”

He added that there would be a heightened police presence in the area over the coming days, saying: “There has been a lot of speculation which has not been helpful. What we need are facts and assistance from the local community.”

Police say the couple had just returned from Letterkenny and the alarm was raised when they could not be contacted by telephone.

They were then found by their son when he visited the house, shortly after 6pm.

“It is my belief as the senior investigating officer that they were murdered at around 11am yesterday morning in their own home,” Chief Inspector Harkness said.

“I have reason to believe that they may have known the person or persons who have murdered them, although at that time we have yet to follow up on that hypothesis and that will confirmed through various lines of enquiry.”

It is understood Mr McGeough was known to authorities.

He spent time in jail in connection with the killing of 19-year-old Peter McNally in Craigavon in 2001.

Chair of the local district policing partnership, SDLP councillor Michael McGoldrick, said the local community has been left “stunned”.

He added: “News that the police are treating the deaths as murder will compound the sense of shock and disbelief felt by residents in the area.

“My immediate thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of the man and women who have lost their lives.”

Local Sinn Fein MLA John O’Dowd said: “I share the concern of the local community and the shock of the community at how this couple has met their death.”

Anyone with information has been asked to get in touch with police.
