La PSNI aspetta una nuova campagna repubblicana

L’Assistant Chief Constable ha riferito a Utv che i poliziotti si stanno preparando ad un’intensa campagna dei repubblicani, dopo aver sventato un certo numero di attacchi nel periodo delle elezioni

In un’intervista esclusiva, Drew Harris ha riferito a Utv che la PSNI ha scoperto i piani per assassinare dei poliziotti in servizio o a riposo e per altri attacchi contro le stazioni di polizia.

Nella sera delle elezioni, gli scrutatori delle circoscrizioni di Foyle e East Londonderry sono stati evacuati dopo il ritrovamento di un ordigno perfettamente funzionante fuori dal Templemore Sports Complex.

I repubblicani sono stati accusati per aver lasciato una bomba all’interno di un veicolo parcheggiato fuori dal centro di conteggio.

Un tassista aveva una pistola puntata alla testa mentre veniva sequestrato e costretto a portare la pipe bomb presso il centro.

Un secondo ordigno era stato ritrovato dalla polizia – cinque giorni dopo la tornata elettorale – in un pannello del soffitto situato nei bagni del pianterreno. E’ stato rimosso dagli artificieri dell’esercito, ma la polizia ha riferito che non sarebbe potuto esplodere.

Utv ha scoperto che l’ordigno non aveva il detonatore.

“Siamo stati sollevati per la mancanza di attacchi sostanziali fino all’Election Day.

“Ma dire che abbiamo tirato un sospiro di sollievo sarebbe sbagliato”, prosegue Harris.

“La nostra guardia è sollevata, siamo molto coscienti del numero di minacce contro i nostri agenti e contro la nostra comunità” aggiunge.

Lo scorso mese un’autobomba era stata abbandonata fuori dalla stazione di polizia di Newtownhamilton e una pipe bomb è esplosa all’esterno dell’abitazione della famiglia di un poliziotto nella Contea di Down.

Altri attacchi esplosivi sono avvenuti fuori dai cancelli del tribunale di Newry e a Palace Barracks a Holywood, dove sono situati gli uffici dell’MI5.

L’autobomba esplosa a Palace Barracks è stata lasciata per marcare il passaggio dei poteri di polizia e giustizia a Stormont.

“Hanno mostrato la loro ambizione attaccando un tribunale, Palace Barracks ed una stazione di polizia e senza dubbio le loro ambizioni stanno crescendo” ha riferito Drew Harris, assistente di Matt Baggott, a Utv.

Harris ha voluto avvertire della possibilità per i repubblicani di portare la loro campagna armata di nuovo in Inghilterra.

“Cos’altro desiderano attaccare?

“Sarebbe una follia pensare che non esistano minacce contro la Gran Bretagna.

“Ma al momento quello su cui stiamo puntando sono le minacce contro la popolazione dell’Irlanda del Nord”.

Nel frattempo, il direttore del Prison Service, Robin Masefield, ha avvertito che le guardie carcerarie della regione sono state obbligate a indossare giubbotti antiproiettile per proteggersi dalla minaccia.

Alcuni agenti hanno delle protezioni interne alle proprie abitazioni.

“Siamo consapevoli dell’aumento del livello di minaccia, sì, e c’è stato un incremento del numero di avvertimenti, principalmente, ma non sempre, in relazione ai repubblicani”, ha detto Masefield al nuovo comitato sulla giustizia di Stormont.

Gli avvertimento giungono nel giorno del primo incontro del nuovo ministro della giustizia David Ford nel Policing Board.

Il ministro ha parlato ai membri del Policing Board, nel quartier generale di Belfast, delle priorità fondamentali per il suo ministero durante il prossimo anno, compresa l’attuale situazione di sicurezza.

Lo scorso mese, fonti della PSNI hanno rivelato che la minaccia portata dai repubblicani è la più alta dal 1998, quando esplose la bomba di Omagh.

Police warn of new dissident campaign

The PSNI Assistant Chief Constable tells UTV that officers are bracing themselves for an intense dissident bombing campaign, after preventing a number of attacks in the run-up to the election.

In an exclusive interview, Drew Harris told UTV the PSNI uncovered plots to kill officers on or off duty and foiled more attacks on police stations.

On results night, counters for the Foyle and East Londonderry constituencies had to be evacuated after a viable device was found outside the Templemore Sports Complex.

Dissident republicans were blamed for planting the bomb in a vehicle outside the count centre.

A taxi driver had a gun put to his head as he was hijacked and told to bring the pipe bomb to the count centre.

A second partial device was later found by police in the ceiling panel of the ground-floor toilet. It was removed by army bomb experts, but police say it could not have exploded.

UTV understands the device did not include a detonator.

“We were relieved up until Election Day there hadn’t been substantive attacks.

“To say we breathed a sigh of relief would be wrong,” said Drew Harris.

“Our guard is still up, we are very conscious of the number of threats there are against our officers and against our community,” he added.

Last month a car bomb was abandoned outside Newtownhamilton police station and a pipe bomb exploded outside the home of an officer’s family in Co Down.

Other bomb attacks occurred outside a courthouse in Newry and at Palace Barracks in Holywood, where the new Northern Ireland M15 headquarters is based.

The car bomb which went off outside MI5 HQ was deliberately timed to coincide with the transfer of policing and justice powers to Stormont.

“They’ve shown their ambition in terms of attacking a courthouse, an attack on palace barracks and a police station and doubtless their ambition then will grow on from that,” Drew Harris told UTV.

Mr Harris warned that dissidents could still take their campaign to Britain.

“Where else would they wish to target?

“It would be foolish of men to discount the threat there may exist to Great Britain.

“But at the moment what we’re really concerned about are the threats against people of Northern Ireland.”

Meanwhile, the head of the Prison Service, Robin Masefield, warned prison officers in the region were forced to wear body armour to protect against the threat.

Some officers even have protection built into their homes.

“We are conscious of an increased threat level, yes, and there was an increased number of warnings, principally but not always exclusively in relation to dissidents,” Mr Masefield told Stormont’s new justice committee.

The warnings came on the day David Ford attended his first meeting of the Policing Board since his appointment as Justice Minister.

The Minister briefed members at Board Headquarters in Belfast on the key priorities for his Department in the coming year, including the current security situation.

Last month, PSNI sources revealed the dissident threat is higher than at any time since the Omagh bombing almost 12 years ago.
