La Real IRA rivendica omicidio di Kieran Doherty a Derry

La Real IRA si prende la responsabilità per la morte di Kieran Doherty, ucciso da colpi di arma da fuoco sparati a bruciapelo e trovato nei dintorni di Derry nudo con le mani legate

In un comunicato, i repubblicani hano ammesso di aver “giustiziato” Kieran Doherty perché coinvolto con un’organizzazione criminale dedita al commercio di stupefacenti.

Nel comunicato si dice che “sapeva del rischio che ciò comportava”.

L’uomo, proveniente dalla zona di Brandywell a Derry, viveva con la sua compagna Mairead e con la figlia di due anni e mezzo. I due si sarebbero sposati entro tre mesi.

“Mairead e la sua famiglia sono traumatizzati e profondamente scossi per la morte improvvisa e brutale di Kieran”, ha detto per loro conto la parlamentare dello Sinn Fein, Martina Andreson.

Il primo ministro Peter Robinson ed il suo vice Martin McGuinness dicono di voler “affrontare” i repubblicani.

Robinson ha affermato: “Vogliamo sollevarci contro le persone che compiono questo genere di attività. Ciò che possono offrire è paura, noi offriamo speranza”.

“La gente può comparare quello che possiamo offrire con lo spargimento di sangue ed il male che loro stanno offrendo”.

McGuinness dice degli assassini: “Rappresentano il passato. Noi siamo il futuro. Noi rappresentiamo la nuova strada.

“E siamo assolutamente dediti e determinati a restare uniti contro le attività di queste persone”.

MI5

A novembre 2009 Doherty rilasciò un’intervista al Derry Journal, dove dichiarò che il servizio segreto inglese MI5 cercò di reclutarlo come informatore.

Secondo quanto riferito al giornale, stava cercando di aprire un’azienda per la fabbricazione di sigarette ma la richiesta era stata respinta dall’agenzia statale Revenue and Customs, quando fu avvicinato da un agente dell’MI5.

Lo scorso mese Kieran Doherty, 31 anni, contattò nuovamente il Derry Journal, questa volta per negare di essere collegato con il sequestro di cannabis per un valore di 500.000 euro da un’abitazione nella Contea di Donegal.

Doherty era stato condannato nella Repubblica d’Irlanda per un furto in un albergo della Contea di Donegal.

L’Ispettore Capo della PSNI, Ian Harrison, ha confermato che la PSNI era a conoscenza dell’uomo, ma questo non potrebbe mai essere una scusante per il suo assassinio.

“Le persone responsabili di questo sono criminali, non forniscono nulla alla nostra società, si muovono furtivamente nell’oscurità e non sono rappresentativi in questa città”, ha riferito il funzionario di polizia.

“Kieran è stato ucciso brutalmente, ha subìto gravi ferite. Non era giustificato. Queste persone hanno distrutto la vita della sua famiglia”.

Per l’ispettore, Doherty ha lasciato la sua abitazione intorno alle 20 di mercoledì e la polizia sta ancora cercando di analizzare i suoi movimenti, ma forse voleva recarsi presso un negozio.

Il parlamentare SDLP per la circoscrizione di Foyle, Mark Durkan, afferma che il delitto ricorda le cosiddette “esecuzioni” compiute dall’IRA durante i Troubles.

“Condanno in maniera totale e assoluta questo brutale omicidio che ci porta indietro al peggio del nostro passato” dice il politico nazionalista.

Come osano?

UTV è venuta a conoscenza del fatto che a Kieran Doherty hanno sparato due volte alla nuca.

Il ritrovamento del cadavere, nudo e con le mani legate, è stato fatto da una persona del luogo intorno alle 22.10.

Un prete è stato avvertito, cos’ come i servizi di emergenza, ma Doherty era già morto quando sono arrivati sulla scena.

“Ho pregato per l’uomo”, ha detto padre Stephen McLaughlin a UTV.

“E’ stata una scena agghiacciante vedere un essere umano gettato lungo una strada di campagna nel buio della notte.

“Era un’ironia crudele il fatto che si trovasse all’entrata posteriore di un luogo di preghiera, il centro di spiritualità cristiana Termonbacca”.

La parlamentare shinner Martina Anderson si è detta “assolutamente disgustata da quanto accaduto”.

“La gente con cui ho parlato nella mia comunità, e vorrei dire anche la grande maggioranza della popolazione dell’isola d’Irlanda, dovrebbe essere assolutamente sconvolta e deve condannare ciò che è avvenuto”.

Ha detto degli esecutori dell’omicidio: “Come osano?”

Anche il parlamentare del DUP Gregory Campbell ha condannato la morte violenta osservando come “presenta una notevole somiglianza con gli omicidi dei Provisional IRA (PIRA) e di altri gruppi duranti i Troubles.

“Mentre c’è un gran parlare di fermare i responsabili dal riportarci indietro nel passato, questo può avvenire solo se la comunità fornisce qualsiasi informazione alla polizia”.

Gli investigatori della PSNI si appellano a chiunque abbia visto qualcosa, compresi movimenti di autovetture nella zona intorno all’ora dell’omicidio, di mettersi in contatto con loro.

Un aiuto è stato chiesto anche alla polizia della Repubblica d’Irlanda.

Real IRA admits to Derry murder

The Real IRA has claimed responsibility for the murder of Kieran Doherty, who was shot dead at close range and found on the outskirts of Londonderry stripped and with his hands tied.

In a statement, the terrorist group said that they “executed” Mr Doherty as they said he had become involved with a criminal organisation linked to the drugs trade.

The statement added that “he knew the risks involved”.

The father-of-one from the Brandywell area of Derry, who lived with his partner, Mairead, and their two-and-half-year-old daughter, was due to get married in three months time.

“Kieran’s partner, Mairead, and his family are traumatised and in deep shock at the sudden and brutal death of Kieran”, Sinn Fein Foyle MLA Martina Anderson said on behalf of the family.

First Minister Peter Robinson and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said they would “stand-up” to dissidents.

Mr Robinson said: “We are going to stand up to the people who carry out these kind of activities. Where they offer fear we will offer hope.”

“People can compare what we have to offer with the bloodshed and evil that other people are offering.”

Mr McGuinness said of the killers: “They represent the past. We represent the future. We represent the new way forward.

“And we are absolutely dedicated and determined to stand united against the activities of these people.”

MI5

In November 2009, Mr Doherty gave an interview to the Derry Journal newspaper in which he claimed that the MI5 had tried to recruit him as an informer.

According to the paper he was trying to open a cigarette manufacturing company but had been turned down by Revenue and Customs when he was approached by an MI5 agent.

Last month, he spoke to the same newspaper to deny that he was linked in any way to the discovery of cannabis worth €500,000 in a house in Co Donegal.

Mr Doherty served a jail term in the Republic of Ireland for robbing a hotel in Co Donegal.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Harrison said Mr Doherty was known to police but this could never excuse his murder.

“The people who were responsible for this are criminals, they provide nothing for society, they skulk around in the dark and they are unrepresentative of this town,” said Mr Harrison.

“Kieran suffered a brutal death, he sustained serious injuries. It was unjustified, it was unwarranted. These people destroyed this family’s life.”

He said Mr Doherty left home at about 8pm on Wednesday night and police were still trying to ascertain his movements but he may have been intending to go to a shop.

The SDLP MP for Foyle, Mark Durkan, said the killing echoed the so-called “execution” murders carried out by the IRA during the Troubles.

“I totally and absolutely condemn this brutal and crude murder which is a throwback to the very worst of our past,” he said.

‘How dare they?’

UTV understands Kieran Doherty was shot twice in the back of the head.

He was found by a member of the public at 10.10pm on Wednesday on the Braehead Road close to the border with Co Donegal and 400m off the main Letterkenny Road.

A priest was alerted and then the emergency services but he was dead when they arrived.

“I prayed over the man”, Father Stephen McLaughlin told UTV.

“It was a chilling scene to see a human dumped along a country road in the darkness of night.

“It was cruelly ironic that it was at the rear entrance of a place of prayer, Termonbacca retreat centre.”

Sinn Fein’s Martina Anderson said she was “absolutely disgusted with what happened.”

“The people that I have spoken to in my community, and I would say the vast majority of people across the island of Ireland, would be absolutely shocked and condemn outright what happened,” she said.

“It is wrong. There is no place for this in our society. We all want the gun to be taken out of our community.”

She said of the killers: “How dare they?”

Local DUP MP Gregory Campbell also condemned the shooting which “bears a remarkable similarity to murders by the Provisional IRA and others during the Troubles.”

“Whilst there is much talk of stopping those responsible from dragging us back to the past, this can only be the case if the community gives whatever information they have to the police.”

Detectives have appealed for anybody who saw anything, including any vehicle movements in the area at the time, to contact them.

Police across the border have been asked for help.
