Lancio di oggetti a Belfast contro parata repubblicana

Trouble flares during republican parade

Independent Hunger Strike CommemorationThere were angry scenes in Belfast city centre last night after trouble flared during a republican parade.

Missiles including a concrete slab and glass bottles were thrown as the Hunger Strike Commemoration March passed a flashpoint at the junction of Millfield and Castle Street at about 4pm.

Hundreds of people and five flute bands took part in the parade which made its way from York Street, along Donegall Street, Royal Avenue — past the point where two UDR soldiers were killed by an IRA bomb in 1988 — before passing the bottom of the Shankill Road on its way to Divis Street and the Falls Road.

Meanwhile, the UDA’s south Belfast leader Jackie McDonald joined scores of loyalists from the Brown Square Residents Association for a counter-demonstration at Peter’s Hill.

There were no reports of any injuries.
