Le azioni illegali della Garda non fermano la protesta contro la Regina

Gerry Casey, attivista di éirígí Sligeach, ha detto che gli sforzi antidemocratici e draconiani fatti dallo Stato per prevenire le proteste e per minacciare i contestatori sono falliti miseramente. Le tattiche chiaramente illegali e impermeate di bullismo utilizzate dalla Gardai hanno mostrato ancora una volta come sia una forza di polizia politica che infrange per loro stesse leggi quando vuole.

Casey parla del secondo giorno di protesta contro la visita dei Windsor a Dublino e contro la presenza di 30 accoliti UDA alla cerimonia di Islandbridge.

Casey afferma: “Le tattiche intimidatorie e di bullismo compiute dalla Gardai nei recenti giorni hanno mostrato la natura fondamentalmente antidemocratica di questo Stato. La Gardai ha agito deliberatamente in maniera illegale. Hanno minacciato e molestato gli attivisti impegnati nella distribuzione di volatini e manifesti. Illegamente hanno strappato i manifesti e li hanno portati via agli attivisti, nonostante il permesso ottenuto dal Dublin City Council“.

“Mentre gli attivisti stavano per deporre una corona di fiori alla prigione di Kilmainham, vicino ad Islandbridge, per onorare la memoria di coloro che ha lottato per la libertà dell’Irlanda, più di una dozzina di agenti della Gardai, utilizzando la famigerata legislazione sull’ordine pubblico, hanno perquisito l’automobile della consigliera di éirígí a Dublino Louise Minihan sequestrando materiale politico. Tra gli oggetti sequestrati c’era uno striscione che recitava “Sostenete economicamente le comunità – Non le visiti reali”. La ragione del sequestro è che lo striscione – posizionato nel baule della vettura – è «offensivo». Hanno tolto altri striscioni da abitazioni private e ne hanno sequestrati alcuni da altri attivisti di éirígí tra cui quello che recitava «Libertà per Fermanagh». Secondo la Gardai, ridicolmente, «incita all’odio».

“Nel corso degli ultimi due giorni, nonostante siamo stati impegnati unicamente in proteste pacifiche, io ed altri attivisti siamo stati maltrattati, aggrediti e minacciati ripetutamente dai cosiddetti «guardiani della pace». Questa mattina, mentre io ed altri attivisti abbiamo attaccato manifesti per il raduno di questa sera nel South West Inner City di Dublino, siamo stati fermati, perquisiti, minacciati e i nostri poster sono stati rubati da agenti della Garda in abiti civili proprio fuori dagli uffici del Consiglio comunale. Hanno rifiutato di mostrarci il tesserino di identificazione e si sono rifiutati di comunicarci in base a quale legge siamo stati fermati e perquisiti, nonostante siano obbligati legalmente a farlo e sebbene gli sia stato chiesto più volte. Anche dopo aver mostrato loro il nostro permesso e dopo l’arrivo di un funzionario del Comune che è intervenuto per confermare il nostro permesso, hanno insistito nel portare via i manifesti”.

Ha aggiunto Casey: “Sono stato maltrattato fisicamente in quell’occasione. Mentre riprendevo la protesta di éirígí allo Spire ieri [martedì 17 maggio] sono stato agredito e trascinato a terra dai poliziotti nel tentativo di impedirmi di riprendere le loro azioni illegali e la polizia politica.

“Questo comportamento illegale e minaccioso contro le proteste pacifiche servono solamente a sottolineare la natura fondamentalmente antidemocratica dello Stato. Mostra le bugie di quando si parla di libertà di assembramento, libertà di effettuare proteste pacifiche e la libertà di organizzare attività politiche. Come abbiamo ripetutamente visto nella Contea di Mayo, le proteste politiche sono tollerate solamente se vogliono lo Stato e la Gardai. Non vengono invece tollerate se loro [polizia e Stato] ritengono siano una minaccia agli interessi dell’elite politica ed affaristica”.

Conclude l’attivista di éirígí Sligeach: “Questa settimana, la Gardai ha gettato via il libro delle regole e ha agito in una maniera illegale. Tuttavia, non sono riusciti a fermare le proteste e ancora una volta stasera [ieri, Ndt] éirígí marcerà pacificamente al Castello di Dublino alle 17:30, quando l’elite berrà e mangerà con i Windsor alle spese dei contribuenti. Come nella visita al Giardino della Memoria [Garden of Remembrance], i Windsor ed il loro entourage lasceranno il Castello di Dublino capendo chiaramente che non sono i benvenuti qui, grazie al canto «Can you hear us loud and clear – British royals not welcome here» (Forte e chiaro ci hai sentito – reale britannico non sei benvenuto).

Illegal Garda Actions Fail to Stop Anti-Royal Protests

éirígí Sligeach activist Gerry Casey has said that the state’s anti-democratic and draconian efforts to prevent protests and intimidate protesters against the Windsor visit have failed miserably. He said the blatantly illegal and bully boy tactics used by Gardai exposed once again the fact that they are a political police force who break their own laws at will.

Casey was speaking on the second day of protests in Dublin at the Windsor visit and the presence of up to 30 UDA henchman at a ceremony at Islandbridge today.

Casey said: “The intimidatory and illegal bully boy tactics by Gardai in recent days has exposed the fundamentally anti-democratic nature of this state. Gardai have acted in a deliberate and illegal manner. They have threatened and harassed political activists engaged in leafleting and postering. They have illegally torn down posters and stolen them from activists, despite permission and permits from Dublin City Council to do so.”

“As éirígí activists were about to lay a wreath at Kilmainham jail this morning close to Islandbridge to honour the memory of those who fought for Irish freedom, more than a dozen Gardai using notorious public order legislation searched the car of éirígí Dublin City Councillor Louise Minihan and seized political material. Amongst the items seized was a banner that read ‘Fund Communities – Not Royal Visits’. The Gardai’s reason was that they deemed this banner, which was in the boot of her car, as ‘offensive’. They have also removed banners from private residences and seized banners off other éirígí activists including one which read ‘Freedom for Fermanagh’ which Gardai ridiculously claimed could ‘incite hatred’.”

“Over the course of the last two days, despite engaging in solely peaceful protests, I and other activists have been manhandled, assaulted and threatened repeatedly by the so-called ‘guardians of the peace’. Earlier this morning, as myself and other éirígí activists postered for tonight’s rally in Dublin’s South West Inner City, we were stopped, searched, threatened and had our posters stolen by two car loads of plainclothes Gardai outside of Council offices. They refused to show ID and refused to state what act we were being stopped and searched under, despite being legally obliged to do so and being repeatedly asked. Even after showing Gardai our permit and even when a council official came out and told Gardai that we did have permission, they persisted in stealing the posters.”

Casey added: “I was physically manhandled in that incident. As I took video footage of an éirígí protest at the spire yesterday (Tues May 17) I was assaulted and dragged to the ground by Gardai in a bid to prevent me filming their illegal actions and political policing.”

“This illegal behaviour and bully boy tactics against peaceful protests only serves to underline the fundamentally anti-democratic nature of the state. It exposes the lie that there is freedom of assembly, freedom to engage in peaceful protest and freedom to organise political activity within this state. As we have repeatedly seen in Mayo, peaceful protest is only tolerated if the state and the Gardai say so. It will not be tolerated if they believe it threatens the interests of the political and business elite.”

Casey concluded: “This week, the Gardai basically tore up their own law book and acted in an organised illegal manner. However, they have failed to stop the protests and once again éirígí will be marching on Dublin Castle this evening from 5.30pm where the wealthy elite will be wined and dined with Windsor at tax-payers expense. As with her visit to the Garden of Remembrance, Windsor and her entourage will leave Dublin Castle in no doubt that she is not welcome here as the chants of ‘Can you hear us loud and clear – British royals not welcome here’.”
