Il fratello del presidente dello Sinn Fein ha negato le accuse di aver abusato sessualmente di sua figlia
Il cinquantaquattrenne, ricercato in Irlanda del Nord per le presunte aggressioni alla figlia Aine Tyrell, ha detto alla Gardai di aver lasciato la giurisdizione per timore di non ottenere un processo equo.
Il sergente Jim Kirwan ha detto al giudice che Adams deve affrontare alcune accuse gravi, compresa una per stupro – che potrebbe portare ad una condanna all’ergastolo in una prigione del Nord.
Per il funzionario, quando Adams è stato arrestato ha replicato: “Voglio solo dire che non sono colpevole per quello”.
Un European Arrest Warrant (Mandato di Cattura Europeo) richiesto dalla PSNI, relativo a 18 reati compiuti tra marzo 1977 e marzo 1983, è stato consegnato all’Alta Corte di Dublino mercoledì pomeriggio.
Adams ha negato di aver lasciato il Nordirlanda, un anno fa, per fuggire all’azione giudiziaria.
Ha detto a Remy Farrell, avvocato dello Stato, di essersi recato volontariamente in precedenza presso la stazione PSNI di Grosvenor Road a West Belfast, presso la stazione della Garda di Sligo volontariamente, e sempre volontariamente si è presentato in tribunale.
“Ho lasciato l’Irlanda del Nord per i miei figli ed eravamo in pericolo a causa del Sunday World. Ecco perché me ne sono andato”, ha detto in aula.
“I mezzi di comunicazione hanno trattato la mia famiglia in maniera vergognosa, un’assoluta vergogna e ora glielo faccio sapere”.
Liam Adams ha detto che gli piacerebbe tornare a casa “ma non in queste circostanze”.
In precedenza il repubblicano si era consegnato presso la stazione della Garda di Bridewell, dove è stato eseguito il mandato di arresto.
Il sergente Kirwan ha affermato che il sospetto aveva confermato la sua identità, di essere l’uomo immortalato in due fotografie e di avere la residenza a Belfast.
E’ stato quindi portato davanti al presidente dell’Alta Corte, il giudice Nicholas Kearns, dove è stato sostenuto dall’amico Sean Rooney e dalla figlia Claire Smith – che hanno entrambi garantito 7.500 euro ciascuno per il rilascio.
Severe condizioni di rilascio sono state imposte, tra cui la firma quotidiana presso una stazione di polizia, la consegna del passaporto e la fornitura di indirizzo e numero di cellulare.
Il caso verrà discusso il prossimo mercoledì a Dublino.
Ritardo
In precedenza Gerry Adams aveva reagito sull’emissione del mandato di arresto europeo nei confronti del fratello.
Parlando giovedì mattina a West Belfast, il presidente dello Sinn Fein ha accolto positivamente lo sviluppo ma ha parlato di lungo ritardo.
“Non ho avuto contatti con mio fratello e sono dispiaciuto del troppo tempo impiegato per emettere il mandato.
“Diventerà materia per i tribunali, come dovrebbe essere”.
Adams si dice speranzoso per il raggiungimento di una decisione: “Ci è voluto molto tempo per emettere questo mandato.
“Ora sembra siamo pronti a seguire l’intera questione – profondamente inquietante – ch diventerà materia per i trivunali e la mia speranza è che si giunga al tipo di chiusura che richiede”.

Adams’ brother released on bail
The brother of Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams has denied allegations he sexually abused his daughter.
The 54-year-old, who is wanted in Northern Ireland on suspicion of assaulting Aine Tyrell, told gardai he left the jurisdiction because he was concerned he would not get a fair trial.
Detective Sergeant Jim Kirwan told the judge that Mr Adams faced a number of serious charges, including one charge of rape – which carries a maximum penalty of a life in prison in the north.
He said when arrested Mr Adams replied: “I just want to say I’m not guilty of that.”
A European Arrest Warrant from the PSNI relating to 18 offences from March 1977 to March 1983 was sanctioned at the High Court on Wednesday afternoon.
Mr Adams denied he fled Northern Ireland about a year ago to escape prosecution.
He told Remy Farrell, barrister for the State, that he had previously been to Grosvenor Road PSNI station in West Belfast voluntarily, Sligo Garda Station voluntarily, and that he had came to court voluntarily.
“I left Northern Ireland because my children and us were in danger because of the Sunday World. That’s why I left,” he told the court.
“The media have treated my family in a disgraceful way, an absolute disgrace and I’m letting them know.”
Mr Adams said he’d love to go home “but not under these circumstances”.
The republican earlier handed himself at the Bridewell Garda Station by appointment where the arrest warrant was executed.
Det Sgt Kirwan said the suspect confirmed his identification and that he agreed he was the man in two photographs and that he had at an address in Belfast.
He was brought before the President of the High Court Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns where he was supported by his friend Sean Rooney and daughter Claire Smith – who both guaranteed his bail on bonds of 7,500 euro each.
Strict bail conditions include signing on at a garda station daily, surrendering his passport and giving gardai his address and mobile telephone number.
The case will be heard next Wednesday in Dublin’s High Court.
‘Overdue’
Earlier Gerry Adams reacted to the issuing of the European arrest warrant for his brother.
Speaking in west Belfast on Thursday morning, the Sinn Fein President welcomed the development but said it was long overdue.
“I’ve had no contact with my brother and I’m disappointed it took so long for the warrant to be issued.
“It will become a matter for the courts, that’s where it should go.”
Mr Adams said he was hopeful that this would help bring resolution: “It has taken an inordinately long to process this warrant.
“Now that it appears to be ready to be served the whole matter – deeply troubling issues – will become a matter for the courts and my hope is that this will bring the type of closure that is required.”
