Lord Saville dovrebbe avviare azioni legali

Un parente di una vittima del Bloody Sunday dice che i responsabili della morte di 14 persone a Derry dovrebbero subire azioni penali se il rapporto Saville ritenesse che le vittime sono state uccise illegalmente

Il rapporto tanto atteso sulle modalità in cui 14 persone furono uccise dai paracadutisti britannici a Derry il 30 gennaio 1972 verrà pubblicato il 15 giugno.

Ci sono voluti 12 anni per completarlo ed un investimento di 200 milioni di sterline. La più costosa inchiesta nella storia legale britannica.

La famiglia di Jim Wray, ucciso in Glenfada Park durante il Bloody Sunday ha riferito a Utv di non volere il carcere per i soldati.

Ma il fratello Liam spera che le azioni legali seguiranno la pubblicazione del rapporto.

“So che la nostra famiglia non ha bisogno di qualcuno in carcere per quanto accaduto a Jim”, afferma Liam Wray.

“E’ troppo tardi e non servirebbe a molto.

“Ma speriamo ancora che gli inquirenti vogliano cercare azioni legali per la nostra famiglia, qualcuno che deve essere perseguito e condannato per l’omicidio di Jim e identificato”.

Guidata da Lord Saville, l’Inchiesta ha riesaminato gli eventi del gennaio 1972, quando i soldati del Parachute Regiment aprirono il fuoco contro i dimostranti per i diritti civili nella zona del Bogside a Derry.

Era stata insediata dopo che la prima inchiesta Widgery, avviata nell’immediatezza degli omicidi, fu respinta dalle famiglie delle vittime come un tentativo di coprire i reali eventi.

Il Segretario di Stato per l’Irlanda del Nord Owen Paterson ha annunciato la data di pubblicazione in una dichiarazione scritta rilasciata alla House of Commoms la scorsa settimana.

Ha anche confermato che le famiglie delle vittime ed i soldati stessi vedranno il rapporto prima della pubblicazione.

Il governo ha anche riferito che verrà stabilito un giorno in autunno per permettere al Parlamento di discutere sul rapporto.

Il Rapporto Saville era atteso tre mesi fa. Ma le elezioni generali ed il cambio di governo hanno costretto ad un ulteriore rinvio.

Saville should ‘seek prosecutions’

A Bloody Sunday relative has said those responsible for shooting 14 people dead in Derry should face prosecutions if the Saville Inquiry report finds that the victims were killed unlawfully.

The long-awaited report into how 14 people were killed by British troops in Londonderry in 1972 will be published on 15 June.

It took 12 years to compile and cost £200m, making it the most expensive inquiry in UK legal history.

The family of Jim Wray, who was shot dead in Glenfada Park on Bloody Sunday, told UTV they didn’t want the soldiers jailed.

But brother Liam said he hoped prosecutions will follow the publication of the report.

“I know our family don’t need anyone to be jailed for what happened to Jim”, Liam Wray said.

“It’s too late now and it wouldn’t serve any greater purpose.

“But we would still hope the Inquiry would seek prosecutions for our family, for someone to be prosecuted and convicted of Jim’s murder and identified.”

Headed by Lord Saville, the Inquiry re-examined the events of January 1972, when soldiers from the Parachute Regiment opened fire on civil rights demonstrators in the Bogside area of Derry.

It was established after the original Widgery Inquiry in the wake of the killings was dismissed by the victims’ families as a whitewash.

Northern Ireland Secretary Owen Paterson announced the publication date in a written statement to the House of Commons last week.

He also confirmed that families of those who were killed by the Army and the soldiers themselves would see the report in advance of full publication.

The Government also said a day will be set aside in the autumn to allow Parliament to debate the report.

The report was expected three months ago. But the General Election and a change of government forced another delay.
