Il vice primo ministro nordirlandese Martin McGuinness ha condannato l’attacco nel quartiere di Brandywell a Derry, nel quale sono stati coinvolti alcuni membri della sua famiglia
“Credo sia assolutamente diabolico che ci siano ancora idioti nella nostra società che ritengono sia importante andare in una zona come Brandywell e mettere una bomba, minacciando le vite delle persone”.
Alcune abitazioni nella zona di Lecky Road sono state danneggiate quando la bomba – lasciata sulla porta d’ingresso di una casa – è esplosa, poco prima delle 11 di giovedì.
Non ci sono stati feriti, ma c’erano dei bambini che dormivano in due delle abitazioni colpite nell’esplosione.
Le schegge sono penetrate nelle finestre, comprese quelle delle stanze da letto dei bambini.
Mark H Durkan, parlamentare dello SDLP, ha riferito a Utv: “E’ stata una forte esplosione – doveva essere una bomba grande perché l’ho sentita e abito a due miglia di distanza”.
Il vice sindaco dello Sinn Fein Kevin Campbell condanna i responsabili.
“Mentre non si sa ancora quale gruppo o persona possa essere responsabile per questo ordigno, quello che so è che è esploso in una zona densamente abitata e avrebbe potuto causare seri danni a chiunque si fosse trovato nelle vicinanze dello scoppio”, ha affermato.
“Voglio far sapere chiaramente ai responsabili che la gente di Derry non vuole questo e chi c’è dietro deve fermarsi. I responsabili devono considerare le proprie azioni”.
Potrebbe esserci un collegamento tra la bomba e le minacce contro una giovane donna fatte poco prima da uomini armati e a volto coperto, quando sono entrati con la forza nella sua abitazione vicino alla scena dello scoppio.

McGuinness condemns Derry bomb blast
Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has condemned a bomb attack in the Brandywell area of Londonderry, in which members of his own family were caught up.
“I think it absolutely diabolical that there are still idiots within our society who believe it is sensible to go to an area like the Brandywell and place a bomb and threaten people’s lives.”
A number of homes in the Lecky Road area of the city were damaged when the bomb – which was left at the front door of a house – went off, shortly before 11pm on Thursday.
There are no reports of any injuries, but there had been young children asleep in two of the affected properties at the time of the explosion.
Shrapnel blasted through windows, including those of the children’s bedrooms.
Foyle SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan told UTV: “It was a loud explosion – it must have been a sizeable enough bomb because I heard it and I live two miles away.”
Sinn Féin Deputy Mayor Kevin Campbell condemned those behind the attack.
“While it is not yet known what group or individual may have been responsible for leaving this device, what is known is that it was detonated in a built-up area and could have caused serious injury to anyone in the vicinity of the blast at that time,” he said.
“I am making it clear to those responsible that the people of Derry do not want this and those behind it need to stop. Those behind this bomb attack need to consider their actions.”
