La conferma ufficiale della responsabilità del gruppo paramilitare lealista è giunta oggi, quando la polizia ha confermato che membri della Ulster Volunteer Force – in teoria in cessate-il-fuoco incondizionato – sono responsabili per l’omicidio di Moffett, ucciso davanti a passanti attoniti a Shankill Road.
Mentre circa 2000 persone hanno partecipato al funerale, un investigatore della PSNI ha chiesto aiuto alla popolazione.
Joghn McVea, Chief Inspector del Serious Crime Branch, ha confermato che la polizia è d’accordo con il sentore della gente secondo cui sarebbero stati membri della UVF ad uccidere Bobby Moffett in un attacco dovuto ad una disputa personale.
“E’ opinione della polizia che Bobby Moffett sia stato attirato alla sua morte a Shankill lo scorso venerdì durante una disputa con individui collegati alla UVF” ha affermato.
“Da ciò che sappiamo di questi individui, dalle informazioni ricevute e dalle nostre immagini informative, è opinione che questo omicidio sia stato eseguito da persone collegate alla UVF. E’ stata una pubblica esecuzione collegata alla UVF di Shankill”.
La polizia sta investigando per sapere se la dirigenza UVF avesse avallato l’omicidio.
McVea ha aggiunto: “E’ stato un omicidio spietato a sangue freddo eseguito in piena luce del giorno in una delle pi trafficate strade della nostra città.
“E’ stato compiuto davanti alla gente normale di Shankill. E’ a questa gente che voglio fare un appello specifico.
“Siamo particolarmente interessati a parlare con le persone che hanno visto attività nella zona di Conway Street immediatamente prima dell’omicidio o hanno visto uomini con indosso aibiti da lavoro ad alta visibilità.
“Cerchiamo anche di tracciare i movimenti di due automobili – una Skoda Octavia blue/argento che pensiamo fosse nella zona di Donegall Road dopo la sparatoria e una Audi A4 blu o nera vista in Conway Street la mattina.
“Questi assassini indossavano maschere, ma non immediatamente prima o dopo aver ucciso Bobby Moffett. Abbiamo bisogno che chi ha visto queste persone parli con noi”.
Si ritiene che la UVF ed i suoi alleati, il Red Hand Commando, siano responsabili per la morte di oltre 500 persone, principalmente civili cattolici, durante i Troubles.
Nel 1994 la UVF dichiarò un cessate-il-fuoco, sebbene una sporadica violenza continuò a livelli relativamente bassi, comprese alcune faide con gruppi lealisti rivali.
Nel maggio 2007 la UVF “licenziò” i propri membri, mentre il gruppo effettuò la decommissioning (messa fuori uso) delle armi nel giugno 2009.
Ma l’ultimo attacco, giunto a infrangere le speranze di chi credeva che il gruppo si fosse lasciato la violenza alle spalle, ha riacceso la tensione tra le fila lealiste.
Ieri Dawn Purvis, leader del Progressive Unionist Party (PUP) – il partito legato alla UVF, ha rassegnato le proprie dimissioni dopo aver criticato gli elementi che, secondo la politica lealista, non hanno interesse nel seguire un percorso puramente politico.

2000 turn out for Moffett funeral
Police also confirmed today that members of the on-ceasefire Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) were responsible for the murder of Mr Moffett, who was shot dead in front of stunned shoppers on the Shankill last Friday.
As an estimated 2000 mourners gathered for the funeral, the senior detective in the investigation appealed for help from the members of the public who saw the 43-year-old gunned down on the Shankill Road last Friday afternoon.
Detective Chief Inspector John McVea of the Serious Crime Branch confirmed that police intelligence tallied with the widely held belief that members of the loyalist paramilitary UVF murdered Mr Moffett in an attack linked to a personal dispute.
“It is the police view that Bobby Moffett was lured to his death on the Shankill last Friday as part of a dispute involving individuals linked to the UVF,” he said.
“From our knowledge of those individuals, from information we have received and from our intelligence picture, it is the police view that this murder was carried out by individuals linked to the UVF. It was a public execution linked to the Shankill UVF.”
Police are investigating whether UVF leaders sanctioned the killing.
Detective Chief Inspector McVea added: “This was a cold-blooded ruthless murder carried out in broad daylight on one of the busiest roads in our city.
“It was carried out in front of the ordinary decent people of the Shankill. It is to those people that I want to make a specific appeal.
“We are particularly keen to talk to people who saw activity in the Conway Street area immediately before the murder at 1pm last Friday or noticed men in high visibility workmen’s bibs.
“We are also trying to trace the movements of two cars – a silver/blue Skoda Octavia car we believe was in the Donegall Road area after the shooting and a blue or black Audi A4 in Conway Street that morning.
“These murderers wore masks, but not immediately before or after they killed Bobby Moffett. We need witnesses who saw these people to talk to us.”
It is estimated the UVF and its allies, the Red Hand Commando group, were responsible for the deaths of more than 500 people, mainly Catholic civilians, during the Troubles.
In 1994 the UVF declared a ceasefire, though sporadic violence continued at a relatively lower level, including a series of feuds with rival loyalist groups.
In May 2007 the UVF “stood down” its members, while the group decommissioned its weapons in June 2009.
But the latest attack, coming against the background of hopes that the group had put violence behind it, has sparked tension in loyalist ranks.
Yesterday the leader of the UVF-linked Progressive Unionist Party (PUP) Dawn Purvis resigned after criticising elements who she said had no interest in following a purely political path.
