E’ stato nominato il nuovo direttore generale del Northern Ireland Prison Service
Per sostituire Robin Masefield, che lasciò il posto lo scorso anno, era stata predisposta una competizione a reclutamento libero.
McConnell, padre di 5 figli, in precenza occupava il ruolo di Direttore delle Operazioni per il NIPS.
La scelta giunge poche settimane prima che Dama Anne Owers pubblichi il suo rapporto iniziale sull’Independent Review of Prison“.
Il ministro della Giustizia David Ford ha commentato: “Sarà un anno importante e combattivo per chiunque sia membro del Northern Ireland Prison Service e accolgo con gioia l’elezione di Colin come Direttore Generale.
“Porta con sé una ricchezza di esperienze, avendo lavorato in precedenza in altri servizi di carcere in tutto il Regno Unito e indica anche una prospettiva nuova su come affrontare le sfide che deve affrontare il Northern Ireland Prison Service.
“Come il lavoro per modernizzare e riformare il servizio sarà a ritmo accelerato nei prossimi 12 mesi, Colin ha il mio pieno sostegno nella realizzazione delle modifiche necessarie per il Northern Ireland Prison Service ”
McConnell ha descritto l’ottenimento del posto come “un grande privilegio. ”
“Non ho illusioni riguardo alla portata della sfida in futuro, trasformare e modernizzare un orgoglioso servizio carcerario, che in futuro dovrà essere in grado di operare per il popolo dell’Irlanda del Nord,” ha detto.
“Il cambiamento non è mai facile per qualsiasi organizzazione, indipendentemente dalle dimensioni e so che ci saranno difficoltà che si prospettano.
“Tuttavia il non fare nulla non è un’opzione e sono determinato a lavorare a stretto contatto con gli altri membri del Prison Service per appoggiare l’impegno del Ministro alla riforma del sistema carcerario”.

New head for NI Prison Service
A new Director General has been appointed to the Northern Ireland Prison Service.
An open recruitment competition was held in December to replace Robin Masefield who quit the post last year.
Mr McConnell, a father of five, was previously the NIPS Director of Operations.
The selection comes just weeks before Dame Anne Owers is expected to publish her initial report on the Independent Review of Prisons.
Justice Minister David Ford said: “This will be an important and challenging year for everyone in the Northern Ireland Prison Service and I welcome Colin’s appointment as Director General.
“He brings with him a wealth of experience to this demanding post, having worked previously in other prison services across the United Kingdom and also provides a fresh perspective on how to deal with the challenges faced today in the Northern Ireland Prison Service.
“As the work to modernise and reform the service will gather pace over the next 12 months, Colin has my full support in delivering the necessary changes to the Northern Ireland Prison Service.”
Mr McConnell described receiving the post as “a great privilege.”
“I am under no illusions as to the scale of the challenge ahead, to transform and modernise a proud prison service, which in the future must be capable of delivering for the people of Northern Ireland,” he said.
“Change is never easy for any organisation, no matter what the size and I know that there will be difficulties ahead.
“However doing nothing is not an option and I am determined to work in partnership with others across the service to deliver on the Minister’s commitment to reform the Prison Service.”
