Nuovo murales UVF a East Belfast

Secondo un lavoratore comunitario di East Belfast non c’è nulla di sinistro nel nuovo murales con protagonisti uomini UVF armati

I lavori per le due immagini, che ritraggono membri paramilitari armati, sono iniziati nel fine settimana nella zona di Newtownards Road.

Viene sostituito un murales del Glentoran Football Club.

Jim Wilson, del Progressive Unionist Party, ha detto che non erano a conoscenza della loro realizzazione, ma ha negato che ci sia qualcosa di sinistro dietro di essi.

“Abbiamo attraversato un passato in cui abbiamo avuto uomini armati per le strade”, ha detto a Utv.

“Se un murales è tutto ciò di cui ci dobbiamo preoccupare adesso, allora sarei felice di questo”.

I murales vengono realizzati in risposta al nuovo murales repubblicano di West Belfast, che commemora il 30° anniversario della morte di Bobby Sands e ritrae i colpi di arma da fuoco sparati sul suo feretro.

Wilson ha detto che c’è stato un “doppio standard” nella critica dei murales di UVF e non di quelli repubblicani.

“Qui abbiamo due murales molto simili dipinti allo stesso tempo in diverse parti di Belfast”, ha affermato.

“In un caso il murales IRA viene trattato come «arte culturale» ed è stato inaugurato da un parlamentare dello Sinn Féin, mentre l’altro viene segnalato come un passo indietro intimidatorio dal processo di pace.

“I due pesi e il montante biasimo contro la comunità lealista deve cessare immediatamente”.

New UVF murals painted in east Belfast

A community worker in east Belfast says there’s nothing sinister about new murals showing UVF gunmen.

Work on the two images, which depict armed paramilitary members, started in the Newtownards Road area at the weekend.

One replaces a former mural of Glentoran Football Club.

Jim Wilson, of the Progressive Unionist Party, said they had no prior knowledge they were being put up, but denied that there is anything sinister behind them.

“We’ve come through a past where we had gunmen on the streets,” he told UTV.

“If painting murals is all we have to worry about now then I’d be happy with that.”

The murals are understood to have been erected in frustration over a new republican mural in west Belfast, which commemorates the 30th anniversary of Bobby Sands’ death and depicts shots being fired over his coffin.

Mr Wilson said there has been a “double standard” in criticism of the UVF murals and not the republican ones.

“Here we have two very similar wall murals being painted at the same time in different parts of Belfast,” he said.

“In one instance the IRA mural is treated as ‘cultural art’ and officially opened by an elected Sinn Féin MLA and the other is being portrayed as an intimidating step backwards from the peace process.

“The double standards and ongoing bias against loyalist communities must cease immediately.”
