Paisley diventa Pari alla House of Lords

L’ex primo ministro e leader del DUP Ian Paisley è stato elevato a Pari dall’uscente governo laburista

Paisley è tra le 50 persone elevate alla House of Lords venerdì, insieme al vice primo ministro John Prescotto e all’ex leader dei Tories Michael Howard.

L’ex parlamentare di North Antrim adesso si riunirà a sua moglie, la baronessa Eileen Pasley, come membro della House of Lords.

Il leader unionista, 83 anni, ad inizio mese ha lasciato il seggio di North Antrim dopo 40 anni di dominio assoluto.

In risposta all’annuncio, l’attuale primo ministro nordirlandese Peter Robinson ha fatto sapere:

“Il riconoscimento della lunga e illustre carriera politica del Dr Paisley è ben meritato.

“Per quattro decenni, Paisley ha rappresentato la gente di North Antrim con distizione.

“La sua guida del DUP e le posizioni di principio assunte nel corso della sua carriera sono valse questa onorificenza” afferma Robinson.

“Un’intera generazione di unionisti è stata ispirata ad entrare in politica da Ian Paisley. E’ un gigante nella politica dell’Irlanda del Nord e di tutto il Regno Unito.

“So che continuerà a combattere per i principi unionisti e per la gente dell’Ulster nell’Upper Chamber (Camera Alta, Ndt).

“A nome di tutti i membri del DUP e dei sostenitori, mi congratulo con lui per questo riconoscimento”, conclude Robinson.

Paisley elevated to House of Lords

Former First Minister and DUP leader Ian Paisley Sr has been made a peer by the outgoing Labour Parliament.

He was among 50 senior figures elevated to the House of Lords on Friday, along with the deputy prime minister John Prescott and ex-Tory leader Michael Howard.

The former north Antrim MP will now join his wife Baroness Eileen Paisley as a member of the House of Lords.

The former DUP leader, 83, stepped down earlier this month after 40 years as the MP for North Antrim.

Responding to the announcement, First Minister Peter Robinson said:

“The recognition of Dr. Paisley’s long and illustrious political career is well-deserved.

“For some four decades, Dr. Paisley represented the people of North Antrim with distinction.

“His leadership of the DUP and principled position throughout his career is worthy of this honour, he said.

“An entire generation of Unionists were inspired to enter front line politics by Ian Paisley. He is a giant of politics in Northern Ireland and throughout the United Kingdom.

“I know that he will continue to fight for Unionist principles and the people of Ulster in the Upper Chamber.

“On behalf of all DUP members and supporters I congratulate him on this recognition”, he added.
