Nell’intervista esclusiva rilasciata a Ken Reid di Utv, Peter Robinson ha difeso la decisione di non dimettersi da primo ministro e da leader del DUP dopo aver perso il seggio a Westminster, affermando di continuare a fare il lavoro “per il quale sono stato eletto”
“Sono il primo ministro ed il leader del Democratic Unionist Party e fino a quando il partito ed io stesso sentiremo sia il giunto il momento di cambiare, allora resterò”, ha detto Peter Robinson all’editorialista di Utv Ken Reid.
“C’è un lavoro da fare e dobbiamo ancora consolidarci e andare verso la prosperità”.
Valvola di sfogo
Robinson ha detto di capire i “timori” degli elettori di East Belfast, insistendo che le elezioni sono giunte “troppo presto” dopo una serie di rivelazioni sul suo conto.
“Riconosco che ci sono stati problemi, quindi se fossi un elettore normale su strada e aveva ascoltato senza sosta per gli attacchi stampa su di me, potrei capire i loro dubbi. Questa era la mia preoccupazione – non poter avere l’opportunità di compensazione il mio nome prima di andare alle elezioni”.
Dopo le elezioni, Sammy Wilson, DUP, ha criticato i media per la caduta del leader unionista.
“Ho avuto un periodo lo scorso gennaio in cui, dal mio punto di vista, sarebbe stato meglio andar via. Quella sarebbe stata la cosa più confortevole, da quando ero diventato la valvola di sfogo di tutte le accuse a mezzo stampa, fatte per vendere più giornali e rendere i programmi più importanti”, prosegue Robinson.
Il leader del DUP afferma che non starà appeso all’ufficio, ma nega che il “marchio Peter Robinson” abbia danneggiato il partito.
“Fatemi essere chiaro – qualsiasi cosa sia la migliore per l’Irlanda del Nord e per il Democratic Unionist Party è una mia priorità”, ha detto il politico.
“Niente di ciò che ho fatto ha danneggiato i miei colleghi, tutti sono stati rieletti e sono cosciente che l’unica difficoltà è stata la mancanza di tempo per uscire pulito dalle inchieste.
“Se Peter Robinson deve andarsene al tramonto per il bene dell’Irlanda del Nord e del DUP, allora lo farò. Ma non permetteremo alla stampa di emettere giudizi per nostro conto – lo faremo da soli”.
Robinson ritiene il risultato delle elezioni generali “molto buono” per il partito.
“Abbiamo sconfitto i nostri due concorrenti unionisti – il TUV è decimato, sono al tappeto… La strategia dell’Ulster Unionist Party è stata respinta dall’elettorato nordirlandese.
“Così nel contesto dei partiti unionisti, c’è stato un sostegno molto forte alla politica, alla strategia e alla direzione intrapresa dal DUP e sono confortato da ciò”.
Peter Robinson aveva mantenuto il seggio di East Belfast per 31 anni.

Peter Robinson has defended his decision not to stand down as DUP leader and first minister after losing his Westminster seat, telling UTV he will keep on doing the job “I’ve been elected to do”.
“I am First Minister and leader of the Democratic Unionist Party and until the party and I feel that it’s appropriate for me to change, so it shall remain,” Peter Robinson told UTV’s Political Editor Ken Reid.
“There’s a job to be done and we still have to consolidate and move forward towards prosperity.”
‘Punchbag’
Mr Robinson said he understood the “misgivings” of ordinary voters in east Belfast, insisting the election “came too soon” for him following a series of pre-campaign revelations.
“I recognise that there were issues if I was an ordinary voter on the street and had listened relentlessly to the press attacks on me, I could understand them having misgivings and that was my concern – that I wasn’t going to have the opportunity of clearing my name before I would go before the electorate.”
After the election, DUP MP Sammy Wilson blamed the media for the leader’s downfall.
“I had a period last January when it would have been ideal from my point of view to walk away. That would have been the most comfortable thing, since then I’ve been a punch bag for all the press allegations as they tried to sell their newspapers and make their programmes important,” Mr Robinson said.
The DUP leader said he will not be hanging on to office, but denied the ‘Peter Robinson brand’ had been damaging to the party.
“Let me be very clear – whatever is best for Northern Ireland and the Democratic Unionist Party is my top priority,” Mr Robinson said.
“Nothing that I have done has damaged my colleagues, they all got returned and as far as I am concerned the only difficulty has been that I haven’t had sufficient time for the inquiries to clear me”.
“If Peter Robinson walking into the sunset is best for Northern Ireland and for the Democratic Unionist Party, then that’s what I would do. But we will not allow the press to make that judgement for us – we’ll make those judgements ourselves.”
Mr Robinson branded Thursday’s election “remarkably good” for the party.
“We have seen off our two unionist opponents – the TUV have been decimated, they’re on the floor … The Ulster Unionist Party’s strategy has been rejected by the electorate of Northern Ireland.
“So in the context of the party politics within unionism, there’s been a very strong endorsement of the policy, the strategy, the direction of the DUP and I’m comforted by that.”
Mr Robinson had held his East Belfast constituency seat for 31 years.
