Ad Antrim la polizia sta indagando sullo scoppio di una pipe-bomb fuori dall’abitazione di Ken Wilkinson, portavoce del Progressive Unionist Party
Gli artificieri hanno esaminato l’ordigno, lasciato sul davanzale di una finestra della casa, affermando che era perfettamente funzionante.
Nessuno è rimasto ferito nello scoppio.
Wilkinson si trovava in casa al momento dell’attacco. Si dice fortunato ad essere ancora vivo.
“Sono allarmato per l’attacco. Mi ero appena allontanato dal salotto per andare a letto ed ho sentito l’esplosione”.
Le finestre sono state infrante e lo scoppio ha causato danni interni ed esterni all’abitazione.
Wilkinson ritiene di essere divenuto un obiettivo perché ha sempre criticato attacchi come questo nel passato.
“Ho parlato su molte questioni, con le recenti pipe-bomb come queste nell’area, e ho parlato delle droghe”.
Ha promesso che l’attacco non l’intimidirà. “Questo non mi fermerà dal parlare; se la gente pensa che questo mi metterà il bavaglio, stanno sbagliando”.
Il ministro della Giustizia David Ford ha condannato i responsabili dell’attacco.
Il ministro, parlamentare dell’Alliance Party per la zona, ha affermato: “Questi attacchi devono finire; non stanno ottenendo nulla se non causare disagio e miseria tra le strade di Antrim. La popolazione locale è molto preoccupata su dove avverrà il prossimo di questa serie di attacchi con pipe-bomb.
“Sono felice che nessuno sia rimasto ferito nell’attacco. Deve essere stata un’esperienza traumatica per chi era in casa al momento dell’attacco”.
Il parlamentare del DUP per South Antrim, trevor Clarke, ha chiesto la fine degli attacchi contro le case della zona.
“Ci sono stati numerosi attacchi simili nell’area di Antrim, che sembrano essere stati fatti senza apparenti ragioni”, afferma Clarke. “Chiedo ai responsabili di fermarsi. Non stanno ottenendo nulla”.
La polizia sta vagliando il movente per l’attacco.

Pipe-bomb explodes at PUP home
Police are investigating after a pipe-bomb exploded outside the home of Progressive Unionist Party spokesperson Ken Wilkinson in Antrim.
Army bomb experts, who examined to remains of the device left on a window sill, say it was viable.
No-one was injured in the blast.
Mr Wilkinson was at home at the time of the incident. He says he feels lucky to be alive.
“I’m alarmed that the attack took place. I had just left the living room and went to bed and I heard the explosion and opened the bedroom door.”
Windows were broken and the blast caused interior and exterior damage to the property.
Mr Wilkinson believes he was targeted because he has criticised attacks like this in the past.
“I’m outspoken on many issues, with recent pipe-bombs like this in the area, and I’m outspoken against drugs.”
He vowed the attack would not intimidate him. “This will not stop me speaking me out; if people think this will silence me they’re mistaken.”
Justice Minister David Ford has condemned those behind the attack.
The local Alliance MLA said: “These attacks must end; they are achieving nothing except to bring disruption and misery to the streets on Antrim. The local population is extremely worried where the next in this series of pipe bomb attacks is going to happen.
“I am only glad that no one was injured in this attack. This must have been a very traumatic experience for those inside the house at the time of the attack.”
South Antrim DUP Assemblyman Trevor Clarke has called for an end to attacks on homes in the area.
“There have been a number of similar attacks in the Antrim area, which have been carried out for no apparent reason,” Mr Clarke said. “I appeal to those responsible to stop. They are achieving nothing.”
Police say a motive for the attack is currently under investigation.
