I repubblicani sarebbero responsabili dell’abbandono di una bomba di mortaio vicino alla stazione di polizia di Keady, nella Contea di Armagh
La polizia ha parlato di una seria preoccupazione per il presunto utilizzo del furgone come esca per attirare gli agenti da attaccare.
“Avrebbe causato una grande devastazione nella zona”, ha affermato il parlamentare shinner per Newry e Armagh, Cathal Boylan.
“Dato che la stazione di polizia si trova in una zona residenziale, questo ha causato gravi disagi sia per i residenti che per i commerciati, oltre che per il traffico in entrata ed uscita da Keady”.
Sebbene l’ordigno fosse messo in sicurezza e rimosso dagli artificieri dell’esercito, l’area è rimasta chiusa per un’ulteriore serata, per permettere l’esecuzione di analisi scientifici.
Alcuni abitanti della zona più vicina al luogo, sono state evacuate dalle abitazioni e hanno dovuto trascorrere la serata altrove. Il centro comunitario è stato aperto per le persone che non avevano dove andare.
Per qualche residente, la polizia è stata troppo lenta a rispondere all’allarme.
William Irwin, parlamentare DUP, ha detto: “Da ciò che ho saputo, l’ordigno era una bomba per mortaio Mk10, e se questo corrispondesse al vero, perché è stato fatto passare così tanto tempo prima di cordonare la zona?
“Questo fatto mi preoccupa enormemente”.
Rispondendo alle critiche, l’Area Commander Chief Inspector Ken Mawhimmey ha riferito: “Sono a conoscenza delle preoccupazioni emerse nella comunità sulla nostra risposta a questo avvenimento, ma voglio rassicurare la gente di Keady che una indagine è stata avviata appena abbiamo ricevuto le prime notizie su questo furgone.
“Come in tutti questi incidenti, dobbiamo considerare la sicurezza non solo della comunità ma anche dei miei agenti.
“Esperienze sfortunate hanno dimostrato che elementi terroristi hanno usato la copertura di simili incidenti per attirare la polizia nella zona con l’espressa intenzione di assassinare gli agenti”.
Indifferenza
Ha anche aggiunto: “Ancora una volta un piccolo gruppo di codardi criminale hanno raggiunto l’unico scopo di causare disagi ed inconvenienti alla popolazione locale.
“Questo ordigno aveva la potenzialità di causare morte o gravi ferite ed i responsabili hanno mostrato una totale indifferenza e insensibilità per la popolazione di Keady”.
Il sindaco di Armagh, Thomas O’Hanlon, ha condannato i responsabili.
“Questo collegamento è in un percorso molto trafficato verso il confine e non è accettabile che le auto siano passate vicino ad un luogo a potenziale rischio sicurezza. Ritengo anche che una vettura trovata in fiamme fuori da Derrynoose potrebbe essere collegata a questo incidente”, ha affermato.
“I responsabili di questo incidente stanno continuando a disturbare e ostruire la vita quotidiana di cittadini rispettosi della legge nel Nord. Chiunque sia responsabile e qualunque siano le loro azioni svianti, un’Irlanda unita non verrà raggiunta abbandonando un furgone all’esterno di una stazione di polizia”.
Danny Kennedy, parlamentare e numero due dll’Ulster Unionist Party, ritiene una fortuna il mancato ferimento di qualcuno durante l’attacco.
“Le bombe da mortaio sono molto imprevedibili ed è chiaro che con queste case così vicine l’attacco era un pericolo, non solo per gli agenti presenti nella stazione di Keady, ma anche per chi vive lì a fianco.
“E’ assolutamente sconsiderato e completamente inaccettabile”.
La chiusura delle strade nella zona di Keady sono rimaste chiuse per altro tempo, ha affermato un portavoce della polizia.

Dissidents blamed for Keady bomb
Dissident republicans are being blamed for abandoning a mortar bomb close to Keady police station in County Armagh.
Police have said there was a genuine concern that the van had been abandoned to lure officers into an even more deadly attack.
“It could have caused major devastation within the area,” said Newry and Armagh Sinn Fein MLA Cathal Boylan.
“Given that the police station is in a residential area – this has caused major disruption to both residents and shop owners and to traffic flow in and around Keady today.”
Although the device was made safe and removed by army bomb experts, the area is likely to stay closed overnight as more forensic tests are carried out.
Several people who live in the immediate area have been evacuated from their homes and have had to spend the evening elsewhere. The community centre has been opened for people who have nowhere else to go.
Some residents have said the police were slow to respond to the alert.
Local DUP MLA William Irwin said: “From what I have learned this was a viable Mk10 mortar type device and if that is the case, then why it was left for such a long period of time before being cordoned off?
“This is something that concerns me greatly.”
Responding to criticisms, Area Commander Chief Inspector Ken Mawhinney said: “I am aware of some concerns within the community about our response to this incident, but I would like to reassure the people of Keady that an investigation was initiated and enquiries undertaken as soon as we received the initial report of this van.
“As with all such incidents we have to consider the safety, not only of the community, but also of my officers.
“Unfortunately experience has demonstrated that criminal terrorist elements have used the cover of similar incidents to lure police into this area with the express intention of murdering police officers.”
‘Reckless’
He added: “Yet again a small group of criminal cowards have achieved nothing more than disruption and inconvenience for local people.
“This device had the potential to cause death or serious injury and those responsible have shown a reckless and callous disregard for the people of Keady.”
Mayor of Armagh Thomas O’Hanlon has condemned those responsible.
“This junction is a busy cross-border route and it is not acceptable that cars are driving past what is a potential security risk. I also believe that a car has been found burnt out at Derrynoose which may be linked to this incident,” he said.
“Those responsible for this incident are continuing to disrupt and obstruct the daily lives of law-abiding citizens of the north. Whoever is responsible and whatever their misguiding actions are, a united Ireland will not be achieved by abandoning a van outside an empty police station.”
Ulster Unionist deputy leader and local MLA Danny Kennedy said it was fortunate no one had been injured in the attack.
“Mortar devices are very unpredictable and it’s clear that with houses so close that this attack posed danger, not only to police officers inside Keady station, but also to those people who live adjacent to it.
“It’s utterly reckless and completely unacceptable.”
Road closures in the Keady area are likely to remain in place for some time, a police spokesperson said.
