Man refused bail over loyalist stabbing
A 40-year-old man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder following a stabbing incident in a Belfast supermarket.
A leading loyalist, named locally as Harry Stockman, suffered multiple stab wounds during the attack which happened at the Tesco store on Ballygomartin Road at about 4.30pm on Wednesday.
The 50-year-old, from the Shankill Road, has since undergone emergency surgery at the Royal Victoria Hospital. He is now in a stable condition.
David Madine, from Innishargie Gardens in Bangor, appeared at Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning in connection with the stabbing, amid a heavy police presence.
He was arrested in nearby Twaddell Avenue shortly after the attack.
Mr Madine’s defence, Denis Maloney, appealed for bail and said that his client had made a full, frank and open admission with regards his involvement in the matter.
Mr Madine was refused bail and remanded in custody to appear at court again on May 19.
However, the judge said if a suitable address was put forward, the situation would then be reviewed.
