Riot a Carrickfergus e Ballyclare provocati da lealisti

La polizia sta investigando sugli attacchi contro i propri agenti nella Contea di Antrim di martedì sera per stabilire se esiste coinvolgimento dei paramilitari lealisti

Due agenti di polizia sono rimasti feriti – uno è dovuto ricorrere alle cure ospedaliere – durante le violenze a Carrickfergus e Ballyclare avvenute la sera di martedì 12 ottobre.

Due auto della PSNI sono state circondate ed attaccate in due incidenti separati.

La polizia starebbe seguendo una linea di inchiesta secondo cui una precedente operazioe antidroga svolta nel quartiere Castlemara a Carrickfergus avrebbe acceso la scintilla dei disordini.

Una piccola quantità di cannabis è stata trovata durante la ricerca.

Un uomo di 37 anni avrebbe causato disturbo ed è stato arrestato.

In seguito è stato accusato di disturbo della quiete pubblica, danneggiamento e resistenza all’arresto. Comparirà in tribunale il mese prossimo.

La polizia sarebbe stata attaccata da 20-25 uomini a volto coperto durante i disordini scoppiati nel quartiere qualche ora dopo l’operazione antidroga.

Fuochi artificiali, bottiglie, mattoni, vernice e bottiglie incendiarie sono state lanciate contro i veicoli della polizia presenti nell’area dopo la segnalazione di un’aggressione.

Un agente è stato ferito in maniera non grave ed un mezzo della PSNI è rimasto danneggiato.

A Ballyclare un agente è stato ferito alla testa.

L’agente è stato colpito durante un pattugliamento di routine mentre si trovava a bordo dell’auto della polizia nel quartiere di Grange intorno alle 23:30.

Molotov sono state lanciate da uomini a volto coperto, danneggiando alcune vetture.

L’agente è stato medicato per le ferite riportate e subito dimesso.

Anche a Eden, poco fuori Carrickfergus, ci sono stati disordini.

Alcuni giovani hanno bloccato la strada bruciando cassonetti dell’immondizia.

Completamente inaccettabile

Il parlamentare di South Antrim Danny Kinahan, Ulster Unionist Party, ha descritto l’attacco contro l’agente di polizia a Ballyclare come “completamente inaccettabile”.

“So che si trattava di un pattugliamento di routine – agenti che verificavano la sicurezza dei residenti attaccati da un gruppo di persone con bottiglie molotov, pietre e mattoni.

“Fatemi essere chiaro – queste sono bande – bande che cercano di imporre una specie di autorità e controllo in questi quartieri.

“Il loro comportamento non sarà tollerato e conosco il lavoro dell’associazione della comunità che sta cercando di fermarlo.

“Chiedo a chiunque abbia informazioni di comunicarle”.

Anche il consigliere di Newtownabbey Tom Campbell, Alliance Party, ha condannato l’attacco.

“Sno rimasto sconvolto che un agente di polizia al lavoro per proteggere la nostra comunità sia stato attaccato in maniera così brutale.

“Spero l’agente sia in grado di rimettersi alla svelta dalle ferite subite e che questo attacco non gli impedisca di continuare a servire la nostra comunità”.

Loyalist link to police attacks investigated

Police investigating attacks on officers in County Antrim on Tuesday night are investigating whether there was loyalist paramilitary involvement.

Two officers were injured – one needed hospital treatment – in the violence in Carrickfergus and Ballyclare.

Two police cars were surrounded and attacked in separate incidents.

The PSNI have said one line of inquiry is an earlier police drugs operation at houses in the Castlemara estate in Carrickfergus sparked the disorder.

A small quantity of herbal cannabis and cannabis resin was recovered during the search.

A 37-year-old man allegedly caused a disturbance at the scene and was then arrested.

He was later charged with disorderly behaviour, criminal damage and resisting arrest and will appear in court next month.

Police came under attack by about 20 to 25 masked men during trouble in that estate hours after the operation.

Fireworks, bottles, bricks, paint and a number of petrol bombs were thrown at police vehicles which were in the area following reports of an assault.

One officer suffered minor injuries and a police vehicle was damaged.

In Ballyclare an officer suffered head injuries.

The officer was injured during a routine patrol in a police land rover in the Grange estate in the County Antrim town at about 2330 BST.

Petrol bombs were thrown by masked men and some vehicles were damaged.

The police officer was treated for head injuries but has been discharged.

There was also trouble in Eden, just outside Carrickfergus.

A number of youths blocked the road for a short time with burning wheelie bins.

‘Totally unacceptable’

South Antrim Ulster Unionist MLA Danny Kinahan described the attack on a police officer in Ballyclare as “totally unacceptable”.

“I understand this was a routine police patrol – officers out checking on the safety of local residents when they were attacked by a group of people firing petrol bombs and lobbing stones and bricks.”

“Let us be clear- these are gangs – gangs trying to assert some sort of authority and control in these estates.

“Their behaviour will not be tolerated however and I know the determined work the local community association has been doing to try and stop it.

“I would encourage anyone with information to come forward.”

Newtownabbey Alliance councillor Tom Campbell also condemned the attack.

“I was shocked that a police officer who is there to protect our community was attacked in such a brutal manner.

“I hope that this officer is able to make a swift recovery from his injuries and that this attack will not deter him from serving our community.”
