Tom Elliott, UUP: chiediamo adeguata opposizione al governo

Il leader dell’Ulster Unionist Party ha chiesto di porre fine alla coalizione di governo a Stormont entro il 2015

Nel discorso alla comunità imprenditoriale e ai candidati UUP alle elezioni, Tom Elliot contesta l’Esecutivo, dicendo che il suo sistema di governo ha bisogno di una revisione.

Ha esposto la sua visione per un sistema di governo decentrato, che prevede l’introduzione di una opposizione ufficiale e un numero ridotto di parlamentari, 70 anziché 108.

Elliott ha detto che i partiti hanno la necessità di prepararsi per un sistema di “governo giusto” dopo le elezioni di maggio per l’Assemblea.

“Nell’ambito del Programma di Governo ci deve essere l’accordo che lavoreremo ad un processo, che avremo un governo corretto e opposizione corretta entro il 2015 e chiaramente questo impone le linee per i prossimi quattro anni e mette un onere enorme per l’Esecutivo e l’Assemblea a lavorare a questo”, ha affermato Elliott a UTV.

“L’Ulster Unionist Party ritiene che il mantenimento dello status quo e dell’essere contenuto con la relativa stabilità politica non è più sufficiente e se verrà perseguito come obiettivo finale dai partiti politici metterà a rischio tutto il nostro futuro”.

“Quello che ci serve è un passo in avanti nella nostra politica economica ed un cambiamento fondamentale nel modo in cui, come governo, noi forniamo tali politiche”.

Le sue proposte sono state accolte con una reazione mista a Stormont.

UUP leader calls for proper opposition

The Ulster Unionist leader has called for an end to mandatory coalition government at Stormont by 2015.

In a speech to the business community and the party’s election candidates, Tom Elliot slammed the Executive, saying its system of government needs an overhaul.

He set out his vision for a system of devolved government, which includes introducing an official opposition and a reduced number of MLAs, from 108 to 70.

Mr Elliott said parties need to prepare for a system of “proper government” after the Assembly elections in May.

“Within the Programme for Government there needs to be agreement that we will work to a process, that we will have a proper government and proper opposition by 2015 and clearly that sets the stall for the next four years and puts a huge onus on the Executive and the Assembly to deliver on that, he told UTV.

“The Ulster Unionist Party believes that maintaining the status quo and being content with relative political stability is no longer good enough and if pursued as an end goal by political parties, will put at risk all of our futures.”

“What we need is a step change in our economic policies and a fundamental change in how, as a Government, we deliver those policies.”

His proposals have been met with mixed reaction at Stormont.
