Easter Rising 1916 a fumetti

E’ il caos e la distruzione del 1916 – ma non come l’abbiamo vista finora.

Gli scolari e gli adulti sono abituati alle molte fotografie in bianco e nero dell’Easter Rising (Rivolta di Pasqua) che adornano molti libri.

Ora la storia della Rivolta giunge nel pioneristico formato di un libro a fumetti, divenendo in poco tempo un caso editoriale.

Pieno di tavole rappresentanti il sanguinoso dramma della ribellione, il libro a fumetti, completo di dialoghi, viene acquistato da studenti ed insegnanti.

La graphic novel (in italiano romanzo grafico) di 48 pagine, del dublinese Gerry Hunt, si intitola ‘Blood Upon the Rose: Easter 1916’, come una poesia di uno dei leader della rivolta del 1916, Joseph Mary Plunkett.

Ivan O’Brien, direttore di O’Brien Press, ha detto: “C’è stata una reazione molto positiva da parte di insegnanti e genitori, che ritengono Bool upon the Rose» un’eccellente introduzione a questo importante evento.

“Una graphic novel che si confronta con la storia irlandese è una cosa nuova per noi e siamo assolutamente felici per l’ampia reazione positiva”.

“Durante un recente evento in cui l’autore ha firmato le copie del graphic novel tenutosi presso la libreria Chapters di Dublino, è stato meraviglioso vedere nonni e nipoti fare la coda insieme per avere la firma sulla propria copia – un’indicazione del grande fascino di questo libro”, prosegue O’Brien.

Il libro è stato disegnato da Hunt, 73 anni, che ha lavorato per anni come architetto per Industrial Development Agency (IDA), prima di tornare a disegnare fumetti e vignette politiche, il suo primo amore.

Il suo defunto padre, cui il libro è dedicato, ha avuto un’esperienza di prima mano dell’Easter Rising, essendo stato nel Boland’s Mills con Eamon de Valera.

“Inizialmente volevo realizzare una graphic novel sul 1913 Lockout (Blocco del 1913) ed è stato il mio collega artista BrenB, che ha colorato tutti i disegni di questo libro, a suggerirmi di parlare della Rivolta. O’Brien Press ha gradito l’idea perché guardava nella stessa direzione”.

Il libro copre l’intera storia dell’Easter Rising fino alle esecuzioni finali ed è incentrato sulla storia tragica di Joseph Mary Plunkett e della sua fidanzata Grace Gifford.

Il libro si apre con lo scambio delle promesse di matrimonio nella cella del Kilmainham Gaol (carcere di Kilmainham a Dublino), poco prima di essere fucilato. La storia viene quindi raccontata con flashback.

Romanzi grafici politici come Maus e Persepolis hanno ottenuto un grande successo internazionale. Questa nuova versione della storia del 1916, acquistabile a 13 euro, dovrebbe aggiungersi a questi best seller.

Così tanto è l’interesse sollevato da questo libro che una mostra speciale basata su “Blood upon the Rose” aprirà il 30 marzo di quest’anno, e si terrà al The Pearse Museum, a Rathfarnham.

La mostra si sposterà quindi in differenti località irlandesi.

Graphic scenes: Drama of 1916 brought to life in comic

IT is the chaos and destruction of 1916 — but not as we have seen it before.

Schoolchildren and adults are used to the many black and white photographs of the Easter Rising that adorn scores of books.

Now, the story of the Rising as told in a pioneering full-colour comic book format has become an unexpected publishing hit.

Full of compelling drawings depicting the bloody drama of the rebellion, the comic-style book, complete with speech bubbles, is being snapped up by young readers and teachers alike.

The 48-page graphic novel, by Dubliner Gerry Hunt, is called ‘Blood Upon the Rose: Easter 1916’ — after the poem by one of the 1916 leaders, Joseph Mary Plunkett.

Ivan O’Brien, managing director of O’Brien Press, said yesterday: “There has been a very positive reaction from teachers and parents, who see ‘Blood upon the Rose’ as an excellent introduction to this important event.

“A graphic novel dealing with Irish history was quite a departure for us and we are absolutely delighted with the hugely positive reaction.

“At a recent book signing in Chapters bookshop in Dublin, it was wonderful to see grandfathers and grandsons queuing to get their copy signed — an indication of the wide-ranging appeal of this book.”

The book was drawn by 73-year-old Mr Hunt, who worked for years as an architect with the Industrial Development Agency (IDA) before turning to drawing political cartoons and comics, his first love.

His late father, to whom the book is dedicated, had first-hand experience of the Rising, having been in Boland’s Mills with Eamon de Valera.

“I had originally intended to do a graphic novel on the 1913 Lockout and it was my fellow artist BrenB, who coloured all my drawings for this book, who suggested doing the Rising. O’Brien Press loved the idea because they had been thinking along the same lines.”

The book covers the complete story of the Rising up to the final executions and is framed around the tragic romance of Joseph Mary Plunkett and his fiancée Grace Gifford.

The novel opens as they exchange marriage vows in a cell in Kilmainham Gaol, shortly before he was executed and the story is then told in flashback.

Political graphic novels such as ‘Maus’ and ‘Persepolis’ have enjoyed huge international success recently. This new version of the 1916 story, which costs €13, is set to add to the bestselling genre.

Such is the interest in the book that a special exhibition based upon ‘Blood upon the Rose’ will open on March 30 this year, and will be held at The Pearse Museum, Rathfarnham, Co Dublin.

The exhibition will then travel to different venues around the country.
