Kate Carrol è stata accompagnata in aula dal figlio Shane e dai parenti stretti del poliziotto.
L’agente Stephen Carroll, 48 anni, era quasi al termine del suo turno di 12 ore quando gli spararono alla testa mentre si trovava nella sua vettura nella zona di Lismore Manor a Craigavon, il 9 marzo 2009, da un commando della Continuity IRA.
Carroll aveva speso 24 anni nella polizia. E’ stato il primo poliziotto della PSNI ad essere ucciso, da quando alla RUC è stato cambiato il nome.
Due giorni prima della sua morte, la Real IRA aveva colpito i genieri britannici Patrick Azimkar e Mark Quinsey fuori della caserma Massereene Barracks, ad Antrim, mentre ritiravano alcune pizze.

Carroll murder trial begins
The widow of Constable Stephen Carroll, who was shot dead as he responded to a 999 call in Craigavon in 2009, is in court for the opening of the trial of two men accused of his murder.
Wootton’s mother Sharon, of Collindale in Lurgan, is also charged with perverting the course of justice.
Kate Carroll was joined at Belfast Crown Court by her son Shane, and Constable Carroll’s mother, father, sister and brother.
Constable Carroll, 48, was close to the end of his 12-hour shift when a gunman shot him in the head in his car in the Lismore Manor area of the town on 9 March 2009.
The grandfather had served 24 years in the police and was the first PSNI officer to be murdered, since the force replaced the RUC.
Just two days before he was murdered, Sappers Patrick Azimkar and Mark Quinsey were shot dead at Massereene Army Barracks in Antrim as they collected a pizza delivery.
