Irish Freedom Committee: la protesta repubblicana a Maghaberry

I prigionieri repubblicani hanno preso possesso delle ali 3 e 4 di Roe House nel carcere di Maghaberry durante la domenica di Pasqua, protestando contro il peggioramento delle condizioni carcerarie.

Dopo la messa di Pasqua celebrata nella Cappella, 28 POW repubblicani sono ritornati verso Roe House e si sono barricati nella mensa. Si sono rifiutati di rientrare nelle proprie celle. Al momento (il comunicato è di domenica 4 aprile, Ndt) c’è un accesso limitato al cibo e all’acqua fresca.

Negli ultimi sette mesi, le condizioni si sono radicalmente deteriorate a Maghaberry, con i prigionieri repubblicani rinchiusi nelle celle fino a 12 ore consecutive, senza accesso ad acqua o cibo. I pasti vengono inviati nelle celle e devono essere mangiati a pochi centimetri dai gabinetti aperti. I contatti con i familiari sono ridotti e sono stati riportati incidenti con le strip searches (perquisizioni corporali) dei familiari dei prigionieri.

Notizie che parlano di un “oggetto sospetto” lanciato oggi nella cappella, prima della protesta, non sono confermate, mentre tutte le comunicazioni in entrata o in uscita dal carcere sono sospese. Ad un prete giunto a Maghaberry in seguito all’incidente è stato detto di tornare a casa e “guardare i notiziari”.

POWs take over landings at Maghaberry Jail

Easter Take-Over at Roe House

Republican POWs have taken over the wings Roe House 3+4 at Maghaberry Gaol today on Easter Sunday, in protest of worsening conditions at the jail.

Following Easter mass at the Chapel, 28 republican POWs returned to their landings at Roe House and barricaded themselves in the canteen. They have refused to go back to their cells. There is limited access to food and fresh water in the canteen for the present time.

Over the past seven months, conditions have radically deteriorated at Maghaberry with republican POWs being locked down up to 12 hours at a time with no access to food or fresh water. Meals have been sent into cells to be eaten inches from open toilets. Family contact has been restricted, and incidents of strip searches of family members have been reported.

News reports of a “suspicious object” being thrown in the chapel today before the takeover are unconfirmed, as all communication in and out of the jail has been shut down. A priest who came to Maghaberry following the incident was told to go home and “watch the news”.
