Paramilitari per ultimo saluto a John Brady

Una sventagliata di proiettili sono stati sparati sulla bara del repubblicano John Brady, morto in una stazione di polizia

Quattro uomini in uniforme paramilitare con maschere nere al volto hanno affiancato la cassa di John Brady, fuori dalla sua abitazione nel quartiere di Drumrallagh a Strabane.

Tre di loro hanno sparato in aria, prima che la bara venisse trasferita in chiesa per la cermonia funebre.

John Brady è stato trovato morto nella sua cella, nella stazione della PSNI di Strand Road a Derry, lo scorso sabato.

Era stato arrestato venerdì per una presunta aggressione.

La sua famiglia è preoccupata per le circostanze della sua morte, su cui adesso indaga il Police Ombudsman.

John Brady, 40 anni, si trovava fuori dal carcere sulla parola per il fine settimana, quando fu arrestato.

Stava scontando la parte finale di una condanna per la morte di un ufficiale di polizia avvenuta durante i Troubles, della quale si dichiarò colpevole nel 1991.

L’agente della RUC, David Black, morì in seguito allo scoppio di una bomba sotto alla sua automobile, vicino a casa sua, nei dintorni di Stabane, 20 anni fa.

Revoca

Brady venne rilasciato in base agli accordi del Good Friday Agreement ma la sua licenza venne in seguito revocata e tornò in carcere a novembre 2003.

Si sapeva che, prima del suo ultimo arresto, sarebbe stato rilasciato entro poche settimane.

Lo scorso anno Brady venne accusato di aver posizionato un ordigno sotto alla vettura di un ex soldato del Royal Irish Regiment nel 2002.

Comunque l’accusa di tentato omicidio venne fatta decadere per le preoccupazioni sull’ammissibilità della prova derivante da un DNA a basso numero di copie, già scartata durante il processo per la bomba di Omagh.

Shots fired at cell death funeral

A volley of shots have been fired over the coffin of dissident Republican John Brady who died at a police station.

Four men dressed in paramilitary style uniform and black masks flanked the coffin at the dead man’s home on the Drumrallagh estate in Strabane.

Three men fired shots into the air over the coffin before it was moved to the church for the funeral mass.

It is understood that Mr Brady took his own life at Strand Road PSNI station in Londonderry on Saturday.

He was arrested on Friday over an alleged assault.

His family said they were concerned over the circumstances of his death which is now being investigated by the police ombudsman.

The 40-year-old was on weekend parole from prison when he was arrested.

He was serving the final part of a sentence for the murder of a police officer during the Troubles, to which he pleaded guilty in 1991.

RUC Reserve Constable David Black died after an under-car booby-trap bomb exploded near his home on the outskirts of Strabane 20 years ago.

‘Revoked’

Brady was released under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement but his licence was later revoked and he was returned to prison in November 2003.

It is understood that, before his latest arrest, he was due for release in a matter of weeks.

Last year, Mr Brady was charged with putting a bomb under the car of a former RIR soldier in 2002.

However, the charge of attempted murder was dropped over concerns about the reliability of low copy number DNA evidence, which had been criticised during the Omagh bomb trial.
