Rilasciato uomo fermato per attacco a Massereene Barracks

L’uomo, fermato dalla polizia che indaga sulla morte di due soldati da parte della Real IRA ai cancelli di una base dell’esercito in Nordirlanda, è stato rilasciato. Un rapporto è stato inviato al Public Prosecution Service.

Il quarantasettenne era trattenuto a Belfast ed interrogato per 24 ore presso la Serious Crime Suite della stazione della PSNI di Antrim, prima di essere liberato.

L’interrogatorio verteva sulla morte dei genieri Patrick Azimkar, 21 anni di Londra, e Mark Quinsey, 23 anni di Birmingham, colpiti mentre si trovavano fuori dai cancelli di Massereene Barracks ad Antrim.

E’ stato anche interrogato sul tentato omicidio di cinque persone durante lo stesso attacco armato, due delle quali erano i fattorini della pizza che portavano da mangiare ai soldati che si apprestavano a partire per sei mesi di servizio in Afghanistan.

L’importante repubblicano Colin Duffy, 41 anni di Lurgan, è stato accusato del duplice omicidio.

Anche un secondo uomo, Brian Shivers, 44 anni di Magherafelt, è stato accusato di aver fatto parte del commando. Gli è stato garantito il rilascio su cauzione a causa del bisogno di cure per la fibrosi cistica di cui soffre.

I soldati sono stati i primi ad essere colpiti dopo 12 anni, e la loro morte fu seguita, a marzo, dall’omicidio dell’agente Stephen Carroll da parte della Continuity IRA.

Man, 47, questioned over killing of Massereene soldiers is released

A man arrested by police investigating the Real IRA murders of two soldiers at the gates of a Northern Ireland army base earlier this year has been released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.

The 47-year-old was detained in Belfast yesterday and questioned over 24 hours at the PSNI’s serious crime suite in Antrim before being freed.

He was questioned about the murders of Sappers Patrick Azimkar (21) from London, and Mark Quinsey (23) from Birmingham, who were gunned down as they manned the gates of Massereene Barracks in Antrim in March.

He was also questioned about the attempted murder of five people in the same gun attack, two of them drivers delivering pizza to the soldiers who were having a last snack before being due to head off for a six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Leading dissident republican Colin Duffy (41) from Lurgan, Co Armagh, has been charged with the murders.

A second man, cystic fibrosis sufferer Brian Shivers (44) from Magherafelt, Co Londonderry, has also been charged with the killings. He was granted bail because of his condition.

The soldiers were the first to be murdered in Northern Ireland in 12 years, and their deaths were followed two days later by the Continuity IRA murder of Pc Stephen Carroll in Craigavon.
