In un comunicato del POW Department, il Republican Sinn Fein ha riferito che i secondini stanno rendendo più dura possibile la vita dei prigionieri.
“La loro violenza nei confronti di un POW mentre veniva trasferito nel blocco delle punizioni ha fatto scoccare l’incremento della protesta. I secondini indossavano passamontagna mentre lo trascinavano, per un periodo indefinito, nel blocco delle punizioni.
“La loro attitudine aggressiva verso i prigionieri va di pari passo con l’attitudine (aggressiva) della RUC/PSNI nei confronti dei parenti dei prigionieri repubblicani. Una famiglia ha subito incursioni (da parte della RUC/PSNI) in casa per 18 volte negli ultimi 2 anni, l’ultima settimana scorso. La famiglia ha un figlio in carcere ed un altro fermato per tre giorni nelle ultime settimane.
“I prigionieri con cure da lungo-degenti non hanno ricevuto le medicazioni per settimane, con il risultato di un peggioramento dei loro problemi di salute; gli effetti a lungo termine di questa situazione non possono venire immaginati.
“Il governo britannico ed il Prison Service stanno facendo come ‘Maggie Thatcher’ con i prigionieri, nella speranza di spezzare la loro resistenza. Non hanno imparato nulla sulle lezioni degli ultimi 40 anni?
“Chiudendo gli uomini in cella per 23 ore al giorno, effettuando continue strip-search (perquisizioni corporali), e privandoli di cibo, medicinali ed esercizio fisico riescono solo a rafforzare la loro determinazione.
“CI impegnamo a fornire loro il nostro continuo sostegno”
Republican Prisoners escalate protest
In a statement from the POW Department, Republican Sinn Féin said that the prison warders are making life as difficult as possible for the prisoners.
“Their violence towards a POW as he was removed to the punishment block sparked the latest escalation. The screws were wearing balaclavas as they dragged him, for an indefinite period, to the block.
“Their aggressive attitude on the inside is matched by the aggressive attitude on the outside by the RUC/PSNI to the relatives of the POWs. One family has had their home raided 18 times in the last two years, last week the latest. The family have one son in jail and another was arrested and held for three days within the last few weeks.
“Prisoners on long-term medication have not received it for weeks now with the result that their medical problems are getting worse; the long-term effects of this cannot even be guessed at.
“The British government and the Prison Service are doing a ‘Maggie Thatcher’ on the prisoners in the hope that they will break. Have they learned nothing form the lessons of even the last 40 years?
“Locking the men up for 23 hours a day, continually strip-searching them, and depriving them of lack of food, medical facilities and exercise only strengthens their resolve.
“We pledge them our continued support.”
