La famiglia McGuigan si è detta profondamente preoccupata per gli incontri avuti dal Segretario di Stato con alcuni dei soldati coinvolti nel Bloody Sunday.
Il legale della famiglia, Desmond Doherty, ha richiesto una copia dei verbali di quelle riunioni e ha detto di non trovare ragioni per cui il governo britannico dovrebbe tenere incontri con il soldati coinvolti nel Bloody Sunday.
Ha detto: “Ho contattato l’ufficio del Segretario di Stato chiedendo i verbali dell’incontro avuto con alcuni dei soldati. Hanno risposto di trattare la richiesta in base alla legge per la Libertà di Informazione (Freedom of Information) ma ho detto loro che non è questo il caso.
“Ritengo che la famiglia McGuigan abbia il diritto di sapere perché questi soldati si sono incontrati con i rappresentanti del governo britannico, abbiamo il diritto di sapere quali argomenti sono stati trattati e perché sono stati tenuti”.
Ha continuato: “Quello che ci preoccupa maggiormente è che il Soldato F, l’uomo che riteniamo abbia ucciso Bernard McGuigan, avrebbe potuto essere presente all’incontro e non vediamo alcuna ragione logica per cui il Segretario di Stato britannico dovrebbe sedersi con lui a discutere del Rapporto Saville”.
Il Rapporto Saville sulle morti del Bloody Sunday dovrebbe essere consegnato al governo britannico il prossimo mese di marzo ed i parenti delle vittime stanno attualmente tenendo dei colloqui con il governo britannico su come il rapporto verrà rilasciato e quando ne riceveranno una copia.

Woodward meets with Bloody Sunday families
The McGuigan family say they are deeply concerned about meetings the Secretary of State held with some of the soldiers involved in the shootings.
The family’s legal representative, Mr. Desmond Doherty, has requested a copy of the minutes of these meetings and said he can see no logical reason why the British Government should be holding meetings with soldiers involved in Bloody Sunday.
He said: “I Have contacted the Secretary of State’s office asking for the minutes of the meeting he held with some of the soldiers. They responded that they were treating that as a Freedom of Information request but I told them that it was no such thing.
“I think the McGuigan family has the right to know why these soldiers were meeting with representatives of the British Government, we have a right to know what was discussed and why these meetings were held.”
He continued: “What concerns us most is the fact that Soldier F, the man we believe shot Bernard McGuigan, could well have been at that meeting and we can see no logical reason why the British Secretary of State should be sitting down with him discussing the Saville Report.”
The Saville Report on the Bloody Sunday shootings is due to be given to the British Government next March and the relatives are currently in talks with the British government on how the report will be released and when they will receive a copy.
