L’IRA ha rivendicato la responsabilità per l’esecuzione di tre uomini i cui corpi sono stati rinvenuti dall’esercito ieri notte in South Armagh. Il comunicato afferma che i tre individui operavano come informatori per l’MI5 e per lo Special Branch della Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) e che sono stati interrogati e quindi giustiziati dall’IRA. Le vittime, originarie di Portadown, County Armagh, sono state identificate come Gregory Burns, 33, John Dignam, 32, and Aidan Starrs, 29.
Secondo la prassi rituale delle esecuzioni, i corpi nudi e incappuciati sono stati abbandonati in un fossato, mostravano chiari segni di percosse e il foro di un unico colpo di pistola alla nuca. L’IRA ha motivato il triplice omicidio in un comunicato inaspettatamente ricco di dettagli, contenente chiari riferimenti al lavoro d’Intelligence svolto dai tre assassinati e al loro legame con l’omicidio di un’impiegata pubblica, Margaret Perry, di 26 anni. Il corpo della donna, misteriosamente scomparsa più di anno prima mentre percorreva il tragitto dalla propria abitazione all’ufficio di Portadawn, era stato infatti ritrovato lo scorso martedì in una tomba poco profonda vicino al confine di Mullaghmore, County Sligo. Nello stesso comunicato l’IRA sostiene che la donna avesse avuto una relazione con uno dei tre uomini, Mr Burn, e che avesse minacciato di denunciare all’IRA le attività di spionaggio di tutto il gruppo: per questa ragione era stata rapita e in seguito assassinata. I corpi dei tre uomini, che erano spariti dalle loro abitazioni pochi giorni fa, sono stati abbandonati rispettivamente a Newtownhamilton, Bessbrook e Crossmaglen, tre località non lontane dal confine in un raggio di 10 miglia tra loro. L’esercito ha atteso una notte prima di rimuoverli nell’eventualità in cui fossero presenti trappole esplosive. Si tratta del primo omicidio in Nord Irlanda da otto settimane e la notizia arriva alla vigilia dei recenti progressi raggiunti a Stormont, Belfast e Londra. Parlando alla Casa dei Comuni il Primo Ministro John Major ha commentato: “Le azioni dell’IRA confermano ancora una volta la vera natura del terrorismo.”

An informer, killed by IRAThe IRA has admitted killing the three men found by the army at different roadsides in South Armagh last night. They claim the men were informers for MI5 and the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) Special Branch and they had been tried and killed by the IRA. The victims were from Portadown, County Armagh and have been identified as Gregory Burns, 33, John Dignam, 32, and Aidan Starrs, 29. In a style typical of IRA ritual killings the bodies were found in ditches, naked and hooded with evidence of beatings and single bullets through the backs of the heads.
The IRA tried to justify the murders in an unusually detailed statement, outlining the intelligence work of the three and linking them to the murder of civil servant Margaret Perry, 26. Her body was found on Tuesday in a shallow grave over the border in Mullaghmore, County Sligo after she disappeared on her way to work in Portadown over a year ago. The IRA claim that Ms Perry was having an affair with one of the dead men, Mr Burns, but says she had threatened to expose the group’s intelligence links to the IRA, so they had kidnapped and murdered her.
All three men disappeared from their homes a few days ago and their bodies were dumped close to the border within 10 miles of each other, at Newtownhamilton, Bessbrook and Crossmaglen. The army left them overnight in case they had been booby trapped. These are the first killings in Northern Ireland in eight weeks, and come in the wake of recent progress at talks in Stormont, Belfast and London.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Prime Minister John Major said, “The IRA’s actions demonstrate yet again the true nature of terrorism”.
