Dissident republicans abandon murder bid on ex-UDR members
Two former Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR) members living in County Londonderry have been warned that a dissident republican attempt on their lives was abandoned over the Easter period, Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) leader Jim Allister has claimed.
Speaking this morning the MEP stated: “Last night the PSNI warned two ex-UDR members in the South Londonderry area that a Real IRA murder attempt upon them was abandoned over the Easter period, but that a further attempt is likely to be made.
“This is alarming and confirmation that ex-security force personnel, who are soft targets, are very much on the IRA’s death list.
“Coming as this does on the back of the folly of departing Chief Constable Orde in dismantling the PSNI’s anti-terrorist capacity and in denuding ex security personnel of their personal protection weapons, it causes me to renew my call for the immediate reversal of the current ppw policy and for the NIO and the police to take whatever steps are necessary to protect those vulnerable to attacks from the republican movement.”
